<div>Hi, mijn naam is Gaby, ik ben 24 jaar en twee jaar geleden kreeg ik de diagnose Usher Syndroom – een zeldzame aandoening waarbij mijn zicht én gehoor langzaam achteruitgaan. Simpel gezegd zal ik op termijn doof én blind worden.

<div>Hoe snel dat gaat? Niemand weet het precies. Maar met het type Usher dat ik heb, is de verwachting dat ik rond mijn 30e grotendeels mijn zicht verlies, en rond mijn 40e mijn gehoor.
</div>

</div>
<div>In Nederland zijn er ongeveer 1000 mensen met deze aandoening, wereldwijd zo’n 400.000. Iedereen ervaart het anders, maar wat we gemeen hebben: er is geen genezing (nog niet) en het verandert je hele toekomst.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Het Usher Syndroom draagt verschillende moeilijkheden met zich mee.
</div>
<div>Mijn ogen kunnen niet tegen fel licht, dit doet pijn en het verslechtert mijn zicht. Denk hierbij aan lampen waarbij je in het peertje kunt kijken, de zon of de koplampen van auto’s.
</div>
<div>Daarnaast kunnen mijn ogen zich ook niet aanpassen in het donker, ik ben ontzettend nachtblind.
</div>
<div>Daarbovenop komt dan nog kokervisie. Mijn zicht sterft van buiten naar binnen af. Hierdoor lijkt het net alsof je door een koker kijkt. Die koker wordt steeds kleiner, tot het de grootte heeft van het gat van een rietje.
</div>
<div>Vervolgens zal het licht volledig doven, tegelijkertijd dooft het geluid ook.
</div>

<div>Elke dag verlies ik een stukje van de wereld om mij heen.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Al van jongs af aan droom ik ervan om te reizen. Een droom die ik in de toekomst waar zou gaan maken. Eerst maar hard werken en goed sparen.
</div>
<div>Na dat ik er achter kwam dat ik leid aan de aandoening het Usher Syndroom kwam ik tot een besef.
</div>
<div>Het moet nu. Niet over tien jaar. Niet ooit. Maar nu. Omdat ik straks simpelweg niet meer kán.
</div>

</div>
<div>Maar eerlijk: ik red het niet alleen. Reizen kost geld. En de tijd tikt. Daarom heb ik – met moeite, maar ook met hoop – besloten om een inzamelingsactie te starten. Omdat mijn tijd om de wereld te zien, beperkt is. En omdat dromen er zijn om te leven.

<div>Mijn streef bedrag is 20.000 euro een flink bedrag.
</div>
<div>Mocht het mij lukken dit bedrag bij elkaar te krijgen wil ik als eerste naar het continent Afrika. Ik wil daar op safari, snorkelen, zandsurfen, bungeejumpen, van al het mooie natuur genieten en noem het maar op! Er is zo veel te zien en te beleven!

<div>Naast deze reis zijn er nog vele die ik zou willen maken, maar ik besef mij heel goed dat ik niet alles zou kunnen zien en prioriteiten moet stellen. Dus mocht dit al lukken ben ik ongekend dankbaar.
</div>

</div>
<div>Ik voelde me lang bezwaard om financieel hulp te vragen. Want ik bén ongeneeslijk “ziek”, maar ik lééf ook. Ik werk, ik zie mijn vrienden, in het weekend ga ik op stap.
</div>
<div>En toch is mijn situatie ernstig. De klok tikt. En ik wil zo graag nog zien, voelen, beleven.
</div>

<div>Al is het een klein bedrag – elke donatie brengt me dichter bij mijn droom. En als je niets kunt missen, dan helpt delen ook enorm.

<div>Hi, my name is Gaby. I’m 23 years old, and a year ago I was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome – a rare condition that slowly affects both my hearing and vision.
</div>
<div>Simply put: I will eventually go deaf and blind.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>How fast that will happen? No one knows for sure.
</div>
<div>But with the type of Usher Syndrome I have, it’s expected that I’ll lose most of my sight by the time I’m around 30, and most of my hearing by the time I’m 40.
</div>

</div>
<div>In the Netherlands, there are around 1,000 people with this condition. Worldwide, about 400,000.
</div>
<div>Everyone’s experience is different, but one thing we all have in common: there is no cure (yet), and it changes your entire future.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Usher Syndrome comes with a number of challenges.
</div>
<div>My eyes are extremely sensitive to bright light – it hurts and worsens my vision. Think of lamps where you can see the bulb directly, sunlight, or car headlights.
</div>
<div>On top of that, my eyes can’t adjust to darkness – I’m severely night-blind.
</div>
<div>And then there’s tunnel vision: my sight is dying from the outside in.
</div>
<div>It’s like looking through a tube, and that tube keeps getting smaller until it’s the size of a drinking straw.
</div>
<div>Eventually, the light will go out completely. And at the same time, the sound will fade away too.
</div>

</div>
<div>Every day, I lose a little more of the world around me.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Since I was little, I’ve dreamed of traveling around the world. A dream I thought I’d fulfill one day – after working hard and saving up.
</div>
<div>But after learning I have Usher Syndrome, I realized:
</div>
<div>It has to be now. Not in ten years. Not someday. But now.
</div>
<div>Because someday, I simply won’t be able to anymore.
</div>

</div>
<div>And honestly? I can’t do this on my own. Traveling costs money. And time is ticking away.
</div>
<div>That’s why – with some hesitation, but also with hope – I’ve decided to start a fundraising campaign.
</div>
<div>Because my time to see the world is limited.
</div>
<div>And because dreams are meant to be lived.
</div>

<div>My goal is to raise €20.000 – a big number, I know.
</div>
<div>If I manage to reach this goal, my first destination will be the continent of Africa.
</div>
<div>I want to go on safari, snorkel, sandboard, bungee jump, experience the beauty of nature – and so much more! There’s so much to see and explore.
</div>

<div>There are many other places I’d love to visit, but I know I won’t be able to see everything.
</div>
<div>So I’ll have to prioritize. And if this one dream comes true, I’ll be incredibly grateful.
</div>

<div>For a long time, I felt hesitant to ask for financial help. Because yes, I am incurably “ill,” but I’m also still living.
</div>
<div>I work, I see my friends, I go out on the weekends.
</div>
<div>And yet, my situation is serious. The clock is ticking. And I want so badly to see, to feel, to experience.
</div>
