Help Michelle and her Cat

Donation protected
Hi, I'm Michelle, and like many of you may have, I've just been through a very, very terrible breakup. This one is a doozy though: my ex basically stole my cat who I adopted in 2014, and he owes me thousands in back rent which I am pretty sure my landlord will take me to court for (he's sorta known for evictions and suing).

What happened? I moved to California in 2015, and my ex and I planned on moving in together after he did an internship at a company here at the time. Long story short, he moved back to Michigan. (even though my relatives offered to pay to move both of our stuff out at the time and he definitely could have stayed here.) After two years of telling me he'd be out here by x date, and x date kept passing, he didn't move here until two months ago. He later admitted it was because he had reservations about moving to be with me, so basically for two years I was strung along thinking my ex and my cat would be here soon. I made many decisions based on that assumption. Stupid. But love blinds you to reality, I guess.

Fast forward, he gets his well-paying job here and before his move across country, he tasks me with finding a place for us to live. I found a nice albeit pretty expensive place in Berkeley, but my ex and I couldn't come up with the full cost of first and last months rent when we moved in. We promised my landlord we'd pay, it's written in the lease - the landlord said he'd give us "some extra time." Meanwhile after a very terrible two months of us living together (long distance changes the dynamic of a relationship and potentially ruins things - I told him that two years ago) my ex signed a lease on a new place somewhere unknown with 4 days notice/before our next month's rent is due, and is not paying me anything. He took all of our furniture except my couch since I threatened to call the cops on him if he did; it's my couch, and I gotta have a place to sleep. He's getting away with this because he has way more money than I do, and I am the sole signatory on the lease because he was in Michigan before we moved in, although he's listed as a tenant.

The biggest issue is that I will be taking him to small claims court to get my cat back (yes, along with owing me thousands of dollars, he also took my cat because I had no choice given the place I'm going to stay temporarily doesn't allow pets.) But I can't do that right now, I need a little time to find a new place that allows cats.

The amount I'm trying to raise is his portion of what's owed, to avoid being sued by my landlord. I'm in a dire financial situation right now, so I can't afford any of this, and I'm also heartbroken and devastated, I love and miss my cat so much it is breaking me apart.

Any amount you can help with will be greatly appreciated. I know I need to live and learn; move on, etc - but I can't be sued right now for what he owes, I literally can't afford it.
