Help Melinda Walk Again

Mom has been on a long journey after having a massive hemorrhagic stroke in June 2017. At least one of us has been there at her side every day. Along the way, she has surprised her therapists with her progress in her functional ability. Now, after eight months, she is finally home, but with fewer resources to assist in her recovery. She will begin outpatient therapy but with less frequency than acute rehabilitation and daily practice at home is necessary for her continual progress.
Getting mom to walk again is one of the top priorities. Everyone knows that she was always on the go. The first thing she still says every morning is, "Let's get ready and go!" She is eager to move about on her own! Research shows that physical activity improves not only motor function, but cognitive function as well. Walking is crucial to her overall recovery, health, and prevention of another stroke.
Unfortunately, insurance does not cover a piece of equipment that would assist her called the Second Step Gait Harness System: https://www.secondstepinc.com/people-in-action.
After emailing the company about pricing, we were dismayed about not being able to afford this on our own:
"Current 2018 list pricing on a GHSII unit, including shipping within the domestic US, is $7,358. List price includes FREE shipping and handling, a $450 value. We do not charge sales tax. Your Second Step e-newsletter subscription tenders a 15% discount off GHSII pricing, for a reduced purchase price of $6,254. Specific details appear at GHSII Web Discount Pricing ."
We strongly believe mom is progressing in her abilities and witness her strength and determination daily. She does her exercises regularly but right now practicing walking at home is impossible because of the lack of safe equipment. A Second Step gait harness unit would allow her to walk at home with a single helper. It is different from a walker in that it has a built-in harness that supports her as she stands and would catch her if she falls.
Please help mom reach her goal of walking again! We hope to reach our fundraising goal as soon as possible since practice every day is key.
