My name is Sara Carmona , and I am a Junior at Bloomington High School South. I aspire to become an Engineer in the future, and I am trying to prepare myself as much as I can.
I have recently been accepted into a Purdue University and Notre Dame University for selective summer programs called "Atoms at Work: and "Introduction to Engineering". However, I was not able to receive financial aid or any scholarships for this program because my current immigration status and without this aid I won’t be able to attend because they considered me like International Student and the cost of the program under this category is very expensive.
the policy of Purdue University about resident students doesn't permit me to be consider like one despite the almost 8 years residing continually in Indiana, because they alleged that my immigration status ( Asylum seeker and Temporary Protected Status holder) is not enough for to considered for state aid, or any financial assistance for tuition and fee purposes, conclusion: I don't meet the Indiana's requirements, this decision it was confirmed by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education who was very clear and let me know: I am not a Non-Eligible Citizen.
my goal is become a Nuclear Engineer focused in energy renewable systems, and I really hope to be a part of the strong STEM workforce to this country, I feel thankful for the opportunity to be here LEGALLY and wait one day to be a U. S. Citizen and with my knowledge and career to contributing in this country to make bigger that currently is in STEM field.
This is an incredibly exclusive opportunity for me to expand my knowledge of sciences and engineering.
I’d like to mention some things about me.
My dream and passion has always been focused on the STEM field. I’m part of the Robotics team at my high school, and I am proud to represent the Hispanic and Latino community in these competitive intellectual environments. I am president of the AMIGOS club, a club focused in making students from Hispanic backgrounds feel welcomed in a predominantly white high school. Being involved in my school and community is really important to me. I am volunteer in HABITAT FOR HUMANITY also because I love to help my community to build houses for the persons with low incomes and also I enjoy to be part of sports as a LACROSSE TEAM PLAYER.
I have a good academic standing, I belong to National Honor Society and I am editor in Yearbook in my High School and I have attended two summers at Journalism High School Institute from Media School in Indiana University thanks to Multicultural scholarschip issued by that institution.
I am incredibly happy to have been accepted in those wonderful summer programs. The field of STEM is a highly competitive field that doesn’t get a lot of representation for young women and even the Latino community.
The Summer Scholars programs is among the top 20 most prestigious summer programs, and I am extremely proud to take part in it as an immigrant student myself. However, I don’t want to put my family through the financial struggle of sending me to them and for that reason I decide to start this fundraising.
I am working to secure a summer job and continue to babysit, dogsit and cleaning houses with my mom. The total tuition for both programs is almost $5000 and I have one part of it but I need to complete the other.
I am thrilled to have this opportunity. There is no contribution too small! I sincerely appreciate your consideration in supporting this endeavor.
I hope I can count on you for your support
