About me
My name is Felicia, I’m a freelance chef from Eigg, a small island in Scotland. In response to the growing humanitarian crisis, with millions of displaced people seeking refuge from war and extreme violence, I want to help!
I want to volunteer in Greece as part of a team that cooks for refugees, providing warm and nourishing meals. All my work has been cancelled due to Covid-19 so at this point I don’t have the funds to get to Greece. To make this possible, I’m starting a gofundme to raise money. Sponsoring me will help raise enough money to pay for my return travel from Scotland, food and accommodation costs (330 euros a month) whilst working for foodKIND for six months starting from December 2020. Any extra money will be donated to foodKIND’s work which also includes care for pregnant and nursing mothers, ensuring they get enough vital nutrients to have healthy babies.

I am inviting you to sponsor me to walk 158-200 miles from Knoydart to Cape Wrath, the most northerly point on the West Coast of Scotland. I am going to walk this challenging trail with my friend Paula in solidarity with all those who have had to walk hundreds of miles to get to the safety of refugee camps. Why volunteer?
We are facing the largest humanitarian crisis since World War 2. Almost 80 million people have been displaced worldwide since 2015. It would be like the whole of the UK population having to flee, leaving behind their homes and communities.
More than a third of these are forced to escape from their countries entirely: mostly Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Myanmar, and Somalia. They seek refuge in neighbouring and foreign lands from persecution, war, violence and violations of their human rights.
Behind these statistics are individual people - women, children and men, all with the hope of rebuilding their lives after experiencing trauma and devastation beyond our understanding.
Many of these make the perilous journey across the Mediterranean sea to Greece, which continues to take a devastating toll on human life.
All these people – including a large number of unaccompanied children - are relying on the goodness and compassion of host countries to help take care of them at a time in their lives when they have lost everything.
This massive crisis is touching me deeply. I want to try and help in a practical way: volunteering in Greece with foodKIND is my opportunity to do so.
FoodKIND was set up in response to the situation in Greece and feeds refugees that cannot get registered and are unable to claim money for food and housing. In average, camp refugees fed by foodKIND have to queue up to 8 hours to receive their meal.
Can you imagine this when you are already hungry?
Refugees have to wait an average of four years before they can even get an interview for asylum. As many live in tents all year round, their situation gets particularly acute in winter, which is when I want to volunteer for foodKIND.
By giving their time volunteers also provide emotional support: It is about letting them know that the world still cares about them as well as providing food. This is invaluable for people who have experienced huge pain and trauma.
We all have our ways to change through positive actions that inspire, empower and support others. I want to help feed bellies that nourish hungry bodies which in turn eases the stress on people’s minds. Creating change requires people working together with different ways of assisting.
