Support Sea Change RCO & Save Lives!

SEA CHANGE is a NEW non-profit Recovery Community Organization (RCO) based in Southern Ocean County, NJ, serving statewide and beyond.

UPDATE! At the ground level we sought $10,200 to get up and running so that our central hub can start saving lives. Link to the start-up budget here. We are now raising the amount to 50K to keep up with the demand. As of May 4, 2021, we have served over 200 individuals through our service organization.

We are launching our “100 Wave Challenge” for this summer and we hope everyone is excited to surf their hearts out to prevent substance abuse and support recovery efforts!

As a practicing Certified Peer Recovery Specialist with 28 years of personal recovery, I have been witnessing our community members suffering, dying and grieving losses of loved ones.  As if things weren’t bad enough, substance use disorders and overdose deaths have risen during the coronavirus pandemic: In NJ, overdose deaths increased 20% in 2020 with a record number of fatalities related to alcohol, opioids and other drugs. Between January and the end of June 2020 nearly 1,600 residents lost their lives to overdose! Those statistics are unacceptable, preventable and treatable.

Sea Change provides a fresh approach taking on this epidemic through online and in-person modes of connection to create, build and establish life-saving help for those with substance use disorders and their devastated loved ones. Sea Change combines evidence-based practices with fun healthy lifestyle approaches to recovery, encompassing ALL pathways.

Through our connections online and in-person we will build awareness and #CrushTheStigma so that we don’t lose more loved ones.

ONLINE:

Our online website acts as our central hub. We host community zoom meetings and are growing our menu of support services as we build capacity. Our services are led by trained recovery specialists with long-term recovery (by both recovering individuals and family members). Each service brings much needed support to our underserved and disenfranchised communities like SOC - and beyond.

Website services aim to include:

All Recovery, Recovery Dharma, Family Support groups, Harm Reduction Support, Meditation, Nutrition in Recovery, Physical Activity in Recovery (i.e. Yoga, Surfing, Walking, CrossFit, etc.), Creativity in Recovery, and so on. Many of these offerings will be through mutual partnerships, other trained professionals and with vetted organizations.

We host virtual live events with guest speakers, including a live Q and A period at the end. Guest speakers include long-term persons in recovery who share hope and living proof of what's possible.

Online we also provide 1:1 non-clinical credentialed Peer Recovery Support Services to both families and individuals. We will also offer referrals to: proven networks of clinical care, medically assisted treatment, Naloxone/Narcan kits, harm reduction services, and more.

Throughout the process we will provide advocacy groups with important data to show how our communities benefit from our services and they take that data to our elected officials and fight for policy change and support.

IN-PERSON:

Our primary purpose is to get together and:

- have FUN

- be ACTIVE

- find ADVENTURE

- gain EMPOWERMENT

- crush STIGMA

Through our fresh air activities and community involvement, we de-stigmatize what it means to be "in recovery". During this pandemic, it is especially important to get outside, to get active and to get together safely. This is true for anyone, but perhaps even more so for those seeking recovery.

We focus on utilizing our unique natural environment and resources to enjoy recovery through healthy lifestyle activities including but not limited to: surfing, walking, hiking, stand-up paddle boarding, birdwatching, clamming, seining, fishing, yoga, lighthouse climbing, dancing, concerts, campfires, etc.

Events vary based on seasons, our local environment and various shore interests.

OUTCOMES

Long-term recovery is real for over 20 million Americans and many of those people are happy to be of service to those who are looking for stabilization, support and a new way of life. We can and do show the way and have fun while doing it. Lives are being saved and families and friends can now heal and thrive.
