Help Me Share My Ancestors Story
In 1745, my oldest known Ancestor, Richard Travis Sr, was born in Virginia (likely enslaved). In 1811, he arrived in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, with his family, a free man. While in Pennsylvania, he purchased 150 acres of land and by 1820, he had established a settlement for free and self liberated peoples of colour. This settlement was also know as a fugitive slave town and was often referred to as Liberia. The black settlement of Liberia (USA) was a station within a secret network known today, as The Underground Railroad. If you take a look at my profile picture for this fundraiser, you'll notice no mention of Richard Travis on the historic marker just behind me. The amazing and important story of my Ancestor is missing from history. I am raising money to produce an educational tool in the form of a stage play to share this story with the widest possible audience. My intention is to reach out to elementary schools, high schools, adults and elders. I am inspired and dedicated to bringing the fascinating details of this story to life.
