My nephew is now seven years old. When we reunited, he was living out of a hotel with his mother, and the conditions were heartbreaking. He reeked of urine, was missing teeth that needed to be surgically removed, and had been kept out of school for long periods. He could not read, write, or do much math beyond counting from 1 to 12. He flinched away from adults at the slightest mistake and apologized constantly, showing signs of deep emotional distress. His tantrums were severe, and he struggled with self-esteem, often calling himself names when he couldn't do something perfectly on the first try.

 He told me that his mother never made him learn or clean up, let him play games all day, and left him alone for hours. Even more troubling, my nephew shared that his mother threatened him with a knife, placed a lock on the fridge, hit him, and used a belt as punishment. After she received an eviction notice from their hotel, she gave me temporary guardianship. Since then, I have heard many troubling stories about his life before coming to me, and I am certain there is even more I do not know. His mother does not believe in getting professional help, and I do not expect her situation to improve anytime soon. If it does, it will likely take years and many setbacks. I do not want my nephew to be forced along for that difficult journey because of her pride or emotional dependency on him.

 I am not wealthy, and I was not expecting to become a guardian. But I am committed to giving my nephew the safe, loving home he deserves. I know my sister will fight me for custody, and I need help to afford a lawyer who can ensure my nephew is placed in a healthy environment where he can thrive.
