Help me save my parent’s restaurant “Los Portales”

Our hearts break for the injustice of Goerge Floyd, his family, and for the black community who have experienced police brutality. It is sad to see the hurt in our community and how many people have been affected by the destruction of the violent riots in Minneapolis. This is a personal matter because Lake street has been the home of my parent’s restaurant, Los Portales, since 2008. It has been an emotional week to witness 12 years of my parent’s sacrifice, hard work and their American Dream shattered in 5 days. 

Over the years, Los Portales Restaurant has been the primary source of income in my household. I am very grateful my parents were able to afford to pay my tuition and in 2019 I was able to graduate from the University of Minnesota. Even though we have lived in West St Paul for 18 years and I graduated from Henry Sibley in 2015, we have always considered Minneapolis as our second home. Due to my parent’s legal status, they are unable to borrow money from the bank or get any government help. Furthermore, my parents' resilience and work ethics, along with the support of the Minneapolis community, have made Los Portales Restaurant a staple in the Latino-owned businesses in Minnesota. 


Even though I have grown up, Los Portales Restaurant is still a place I call home. It was the place I spent all of my childhood summers helping my parents. In addition, My parents taught me to be empathetic, humble, to pursue my dreams, to give back to the community, and to always fight for justice. 


Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic had already jeopardized the stability of Los Portales Restaurant, and now with the destruction of Lake Street, it has seriously endangered the permanent closure of the business. 


The reality is that my parents need your help. Consider supporting Los Portales in order to keep my parent’s American Dream alive today. In addition, a portion of the funds raised will help to create employment for our Minneapolis community and to support Los Portales employees.
