On October 8th, I underwent brain surgery to have a VP shunt inserted after a sudden and frightening change in my vision. In September, I noticed my vision was getting blurry and assumed it was a minor issue, maybe an infection. I went to the eye doctor expecting to leave with a prescription for eye drops, but instead, I was immediately sent to a specialist. There, I learned that I had so much spinal fluid in my skull that it was bending my optic nerves. The doctor told me that if I didn’t have a VP shunt inserted as soon as possible, I would lose my vision and suffer brain damage.
The next month was a whirlwind of doctor visits, scans, and a spinal tap. I was fortunate to qualify for FMLA and short-term disability, but those benefits didn’t cover all my bills. Now, I find myself several thousand dollars in debt, trying to recover from surgery while worrying about how to pay for both my medical bills and everyday living expenses.
As a mental health case manager, I dedicate my life to helping those in need. Now, I find myself in need of help. If you’re able to support me during this difficult time, I would be deeply grateful. Your kindness will help me recover, and I promise to pay it forward as soon as I am able.
