HELP PRODUCE PALEFACE CONCERT!

Donation protected

My PALEFACE CONCERT will be different than anything I've ever produced and I could use your help. I'm bringing together fabulous musicians  and one of New York's most exciting visual artists, all in the sublime acoustics of Zipper Concert Hall in downtown LA. Even the audience will get into the act— everyone gets to play kazoos!

You are all part of my special community—some of you follow my music, some enjoy my talks at the LA Philharmonic, some of you are passionate participants in my lecture series, some of you follow my blog on classical music, and others still are part of the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra that I founded and conduct.  Contemporary music concerts are always labors of love. But I am at my core a composer, and this concert particularly lets me directly share my strongest work and innermost musical passion with you.

RUSSELL STEINBERG—PALEFACE CONCERT

Thursday December 12 7:30pm

Zipper Concert Hall, Colburn School of Performing Arts
Why Paleface? Jerry Kearns' artwork hits me in the gut. It's dazzling, it's funny, and ultimately it's very dark. Without specific politics, Kearns nails our disembodied identity as Americans. And it is a message we all need to hear. Our hero models—whether the cowboy, the detective, the secret agent, the action hero, or Jesus—are ungrounded and impotent as they struggle to find meaning in our modern world.  My music works in counterpoint with Kearns' layerings to create an emotional journey from the Wild West and the Action Hero, all leading to a final nightmare and prayer.

Concert highlights:

•West Coast premiere of Paleface: the Mythology Underlying the American Narrative,  performed by Trio Accento with projected video of paintings by New York "psychological pop artist" Jerry Kearns. The audience has a part playing kazoos in the second movement!
