Help a Young Doctor Overcome a Mountain of Debt After Achieving Her Dream

Hello, my name is Diniwe Tembo, a 33-year-old doctor from Zambia.

Ever since I was young, I dreamed of becoming a doctor—not for the title, but to make a real difference in people's lives. That dream took me to Ukraine, where I began my medical studies with the full support of my father, who was not only my sponsor but also my best friend and greatest cheerleader.

Tragically, towards the end of my 1st year of medical school, my father passed away. His death was not only emotionally devastating, but it also shook the foundation of my education. Despite the loss, I was determined to continue—he had always believed in me, and I was committed to making him proud.

With the little savings my father had left, I managed to complete my 2nd year and the 3rd year. From then on, things became incredibly difficult. I struggled to find the money to get through to my 4th year till the final 6th year. My community gave what they could, but their resources were limited.

I even tried creating a GoFundMe during that time, but it didn’t reach many people. Eventually, I had to take out loans, and my mother—who is a schoolteacher—was forced to sell our family home to help me continue. It was one of the hardest moments of our lives.

Despite everything, I graduated from medical school—but I returned home to Zambia heavily in debt. Even my flight ticket back had to be purchased with borrowed money. I hoped to start working right away, but it took three years before I was officially employed as a doctor.

Now I am working, serving the people of my country. But every cent of my salary goes toward repaying debts that are growing beyond my control. My mother is still struggling, and we are both at the end of our strength.

I tried to handle this alone. I truly did. But now I’m reaching out with humility, asking for help so I can breathe again, focus fully on helping others, and move forward with hope.
