Lieve mensen,
In mei is het me gelukt: ik, Karen, ben Nederlands kampioen paalsport geworden!
Naast een prachtige gouden plak heeft deze titel me nog iets heel bijzonders opgeleverd: een kwalificatie voor het wereldkampioenschap in Buenos Aires, Argentinië eind oktober. En wat ik niet verwacht had gebeurde toch: het begon te kriebelen en de droom om naar het WK in Argentinië te gaan werd geboren. Mijn routine met als thema The Witcher verdient een plekje op dat wereldpodium!
Mijn droom, mijn strijd
Mensen die mij goed kennen zullen nu denken: "Droom...? Maar je hebt toch vliegangst?!" Dat klopt! Toch is mijn wens om Nederland te vertegenwoordigen op het WK zo'n grote motivator, dat ik ervoor kies stappen te zetten om deze angst onder ogen te zien. Dat betekent, naast heel veel trainen, ook therapie en mentale voorbereiding. Want op het WK wil ik mijn allerbeste zelf laten zien.
Waarom ik deze campagne start
Mijn deelname aan het WK is niet vanzelfsprekend. De kosten om er te kunnen staan zijn hoog, en als paalsporter krijg je in Nederland geen enkele subsidie. Alles komt dus op eigen kosten. Om je hier een inkijkje in te geven:
- Alleen al het huren van een geschikte trainingsruimte om 3x per week 2 uurtjes mijn WK-routine te kunnen trainen, loopt in de honderden euro's.
- Hetzelfde geldt voor coaching voor mijn WK-traject.
- Inschrijfgeld voor WK-deelname.
- TeamNL tracksuits die we op het WK moeten dragen.
- Vervoer ter plekke van en naar de WK-venue.
- En in mijn geval ook extra kosten voor EMDR-therapie, om mijn vliegangst aan te pakken.
Voor de vliegtickets en het verblijf heb ik zelf al hard gespaard. Maar al deze bijkomende kosten rondom het WK lopen ook nog eens op tot meer dan € 2000,00.
Wat kun jij doen?
In de paalsport is het onder atleten heel gebruikelijk om via crowdfunding deelname aan het WK mogelijk te maken. Dus hierbij, met lichte spanning en toch een beetje gene, mijn vraag aan jou:

Elke bijdrage – klein of groot – helpt mij een stap dichterbij het WK-podium. Ik waardeer het enorm als je me hier in wil steunen. Dus:

In May I did it: I, Karen, became Dutch Champion in pole sports!
Alongside a beautiful gold medal, this title brought me something even more special: a qualification for the World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the end of October. And what I didn’t expect happened: the spark was lit, and the dream to go to the World Championships in Argentina was born. My routine, themed The Witcher, deserves a place on that world stage!
My dream, my battle
People who know me well will now think: "A dream...? But aren’t you afraid of flying?!" That’s right! Still, my desire to represent the Netherlands at the World Championships is such a strong motivator that I’m choosing to take steps to face this fear. That means, in addition to a lot of training, also therapy and mental preparation. Because at the World Championships, I want to show the very best version of myself.
Why I’m starting this campaign
My participation in the World Championships is not a given. The costs to get there are high, and as a pole athlete in the Netherlands, you don’t receive any subsidy. Everything is at your own expense. To give you a little insight:
- Just renting a suitable training space to train my World Championships routine 3 times a week for 2 hours already runs into hundreds of euros.
- The same goes for coaching.
- Registration fee for participation in the World Championships.
- TeamNL tracksuits we are required to wear at the World Championships.
- Local transportation to and from the World Championships venue.
- And in my case, additional costs for EMDR therapy to tackle my fear of flying.
I’ve already been saving for the plane tickets and accommodation. But all these additional costs regarding the World Championships also add up to more than € 2,000.00.
What can you do?
In pole sports, it’s very common among athletes to make participation in the World Championships possible through crowdfunding. So here is – with a little nervousness and a bit of shyness – my question to you:
