A philosopher in need of assitance! My 2019 Academic Funding Campaign.
Hi, my name is Tarquin Rees. I am a Phd student in my first year (2019/20) at CCCU Canterbury. My area of research is in relation to heterodoxy in religion/spirituality/education with a particular emphasis on the Christian Holy Fools – hence the cover photo above (also, coincidentally how I feel sometimes contemplating the financial and academic Everest I have set myself) – and concepts of incurring blame (particularly in relation to Sufism and the Greek Cynics) with minor diversions into Corbin, the Imaginal, Gurdjieff and sundry Forteana.
The story so far…full transparency
I have been trying to forge a career as an academic for quite some time, I have met with financial barriers but have never given up! I received my undergraduate degree from SOAS, London University in 1995 and was accepted to Oxford for postgraduate study but could not secure funding.
In 2004 I began studying at Edinburgh for an Mphil – a similar topic to that I am researching now “The Malamatiyya in Sufism” but again, lack of funding prevented my completion.
In 2017/18 I secured funding via a postgraduate loan for my MA in Myth, Cosmology and the Sacred and I graduated with a Distinction in 2018. At that time there was no Doctorate loan available but this loan was introduced that year and I was eligible to apply!
However, the path was not smooth! On applying I found I was not eligible because of my previous student loan which needs to be paid off first (this is around £4000) and is a form of Catch-22 as if I secured the Doctoral loan I could pay off the outstanding student loan but cannot get the Doctoral loan until it is paid (even though it does not need to be).
So, a convoluted situation which leaves me with several pathways:
1) Self-fund my own studies minus loan 2) Self-fund £4000 to clear student loan and secure the Doctoral loan for the remaining two years of study (I am approaching the end of Year One and, if all goes well, expect to graduate in 2021).
Accordingly, I have decided to focus on raising this £4000 plus a further £2000 to see me through to the end of the academic year. This GoFundMe is part of that Impossible Dream!
What I needand what I can offer in return
As described above I need to raise £4000 to pay the student loan and enable my application for Doctoral funding plus around £2000 for academic/living expenses until the end of 2019.
To this end I am selling my personal collection of rare signed Modern First Editions and engaging in other madcap money-raising schemes.
GoFundMe does not have a tier/reward system like other Crowdfunding platforms but I don’t believe in getting anything for nothing so I am going to create my own in a loose and arbitrary fashion.
As I mentioned above, I am selling my rare book collection. For any given donation I am prepared to offer a book of the Giver’s choice up to the value of the donation when combined with postage.
£50 donation (post to UK): Book (say) £40 and shipping £7
£75 donation (post to US): Book (say) £60 and shipping £15
These are examples but the shipping prices are more or less accurate – depending on weight. As these are rare books in pristine condition though, I don’t skimp on postage and send insured and in protective packaging. They are rare collectibles and cannot be damaged! NO jiffy bags!
The current book listings may be seen here at ABE Books - all are mint/unread with genuine signatures. Let me know if any one of them strikes your fancy before or straight after donating and I will delist the book on ABE. Feel free to mail me for further info.
For higher donations I am happy to consult on all internet matters and/or to create a website of any complexity. This can be discussed! I was in a previous life for many years a professional web developer with my own agency – if you would be interested in this then drop me a line.
I have a small collection of antique and other tribal rugs and weavings. I am debating selling these for the cause and if I do then I will make a small site/gallery and post the link here. If you are interested in this possibility then feel free to get in touch!
I think that’s it and probably all I can offer at the moment! I might think of something else though but in the meantime, thanks for taking the time to read this far and any help you can offer, however large or small, will be infinitely appreciated and I will forever be in your debt. Literally!
In the meantime you may follow my philosophical ramblings at my blog Paralogical should you be so inclined!
