Hi, I am Mary Sandlin, and we are trying to make my Grandson's dream come true. The fundraiser is in my name, but it is his story and dream to tell. Everything written after this point will be what he wrote. Thank you in advance for your support.
“Hello, I am David Hendrix. I am 31 years old with a rare disability called “Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1.” It is a severe muscle deterioration disorder that targets my muscles and destroys them until there's nothing left. Originally, the doctors told me I would not live to be two years old.
When I was around 6–7 years old, I had made a wish through the Make-A-Wish foundation to fly in a helicopter. Unfortunately, after they set up the date, I got pneumonia. I was hospitalized and unable to fly in the helicopter. Nevertheless, Make-A-Wish told me that since they had paid the fuel expenses, which was around $10,000, that they considered my wish granted, even though I never got to fly.
I have had a tough life spending most of it in the hospital. I went to the Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, for 18 straight years with pneumonia, sometimes even double pneumonia. Overall, I have been on a ventilator three times, with each time being life threatening.
However, as I got older, I found something I was good at since I couldn't play sports like the other kids. That something was poker and I truly feel that I’m alive today due to the love I have for this game. I play every day at home, and love learning more and more about the game. To be honest with you, I do not know how much longer my body can hold up. It has gotten tough to do the simplest of things in life. For example, I can no longer even feed myself. Before I am unable, I want to fulfill the dream of every poker player: PLAY IN THE WORLD SERIES OF POKER. This July, the tournament series, which has been played in Las Vegas since 1970, will have 88 tournaments. I want to experience playing in a few of these events in the most famous poker tournament of them all. This would be my ultimate dream come true.
This fundraiser will cover the cost of travel (which will be the most significant due to my condition), tournaments fees and others expenses.
