Help me maintain my independence

Donation protected
Friends - I need some help. My handicap-equipped van is dying, and needs to be replaced ASAP. If I was still able to work, Mass Rehab would pay for that. But now that I’m on disability retirement, no funding sources are available to help me replace my van. None.

I use a motorized wheelchair full-time now, and my independence depends on having a vehicle I can enter, drive and exit from my wheelchair. That means a used mini-van, fitted with adaptive equipment like tie-downs, power doors, adapted steering with reduced-effort motor and knob, a motorized ramp, and full hand controls. All-in, the estimate is about $40K.

I’m reaching out to ask your help to help me replace my van so I can keep my independence.

I’ve driven an adapted vehicle all my adult life. It has allowed me to be an involved parent, have a career, and be there for friends and family. Now I take classes, volunteer to help combat fraud targeted at seniors, and am also helping to raise Ben’s brother Jake.

Public transport for people at my disability level is inflexible and in short supply. It’s not like a taxi or bus - you can’t just wait at a bus stop or call to get a ride. Independence depends on being able to go where life happens and where I’m needed. That’s why this van is so important to me.

If you can contribute, thank you. And I’d really appreciate it if you could share this with your network.
