And as for the rest? I want to get the **** out of here -- not as in leaving the Bay Area and leaving behind my work, but as in getting away to rest. For self-care. I was doing direct service in San Francisco for most of my adult life until I went back to college in my early 30s. I did direct service again in seminary to fulfill my field education requirement. I have made tikkun olam not only my profession but my life.

In a nutshell: I was emotionally abused in my graduate theological education program. Because the school did next to nothing to penalize the offenders, my next option was to conduct an independent inquiry for myself.

 

Is graduate theological education compatible with the Western, capitalist, patriarchal academy? What is the history of the seminary and of the university, and how do those histories still influence those institutions today?

 

Why are students always the ones who are treated the worst? No matter how much money we fork over, we are always seen as expendable.

 

These are very real harms that have led to mental health crises and outright suicide. I write about these issues and try to answer the above questions in my memoir.

The philosopher Hannah Arendt coined the term "the banality of evil." That is what is happening in higher education today. Abusive behavior has been normalized as the "process" of obtaining an education.

And why are we following them in 2021?
