Help Me Investigate Higher Education

Estimated itemization (as excerpted from p. 14)
Because this project was incubated in part under the ReGeneration 2021 cohort , I received a $1200 grant check which, of course, went toward rent.

Here is a broad breakdown of expenses the book contract [funded by the people] will cover:
  • $15,000 toward back rent and current rent
  • $5,000 toward tuition
  • $1,000 reserved for surprise fees the institution has up its sleeve
  • $1,000 estimated reserved for platform fees
  • $1,000 paid to Jael, a dear friend who graciously volunteered to monitor all my inboxes after the incidents of emotional violence
  • $5,000 to Jael or another personal assistant who will monitor all my email inboxes until the end of the year, and will also serve as my official spokesperson so that I never have to personally deal with my horrific seminary ever again -- in plain language: have someone else handle them for a change
  • $5,000 to be deposited into my woefully overdrawn checking account, to be used primarily for buying food
  • I’ve run out of credit. As of right now, I don’t have any immediate means of buying food.
  • $5,000 reserved for credit card debt
And as for the rest? I want to get the **** out of here -- not as in leaving the Bay Area and leaving behind my work, but as in getting away to rest. For self-care. I was doing direct service in San Francisco for most of my adult life until I went back to college in my early 30s. I did direct service again in seminary to fulfill my field education requirement. I have made tikkun olam not only my profession but my life.

And I am so exhausted.

Hi everyone!

My name is Joseph. I'm the co-host for a podcast called Horror Nerds at Church . I'm also a seminarian who is about to be evicted from campus housing.

To get the clearest idea about this fundraiser, the best thing to do is read my new memoir, The Remnant of Israel, which is out now on my website at http://www.josephramelo.com   .

You can also watch the video posted above, although I warn you, it's 15 minutes. It's not that I don't know how to be concise. It's that I needed to be really clear about what I'm doing.

In a nutshell: I was emotionally abused in my graduate theological education program. Because the school did next to nothing to penalize the offenders, my next option was to conduct an independent inquiry for myself.

Is graduate theological education compatible with the Western, capitalist, patriarchal academy? What is the history of the seminary and of the university, and how do those histories still influence those institutions today?

Why are students always the ones who are treated the worst? No matter how much money we fork over, we are always seen as expendable.

These are very real harms that have led to mental health crises and outright suicide. I write about these issues and try to answer the above questions in my memoir.

For many of you, making a monetary donation is not possible at this time. However, you can make an awareness donation: tell everyone about my memoir. Share my website www.josephramelo.com far and wide.

The philosopher Hannah Arendt coined the term "the banality of evil." That is what is happening in higher education today. Abusive behavior has been normalized as the "process" of obtaining an education.

Why?

Who made up these rules?

And why are we following them in 2021?
