Help Me Help the $6.2M Dollar Man
Over the past 15 years my husband, Mark, has undergone multiple surgeries. His feet and ankles have been reconstructed. He has a six inch scar over his lower spine from a surgery that included the removal of chucks of overgrown bone and the repair of the sheath that covers the spinal cord (he was leaking spinal fluid and suffering from head-splitting migraines). His nose was rebuilt so he could breath better and his voice box recentered (the result of breaking his neck in his youth). Most recently he had a partial knee replacement and, when that didn't take, his surgeon went back in and did a total knee replacement. In short my husband is a complete renovation/reconstruction project! Now, even with insurance, this reconstruction project did not come cheap (the back surgery alone was $325,000, of which we owed about $32,000). Over the years we have accumulated debt but we kept it under control by living the simple life. However, since Mark’s back surgery in 2013, he has not been able to work and the balance between debt and income has become increasing hard to maintain. I work full-time and have a part-time job as well but my ends are stubbornly refusing to meet.
Here’s where we make the request: Mark is now covered under Medicare so any future work will cost us almost nothing (HURRAY!). But we are looking at about $77,000 in accumulated medical debt. Any contribution, at any level, that you can give to help ease the load and bring our little ship back in balance would be greatly appreciated.
