Hey friends, family, and dear ones!
I need YOUR help getting prenatal care.
The midwife I’d like to see in California isn’t covered by Medi-CAL. This means I must pay $3,800 out of pocket.
WHY DO I NEED YOUR HELP?
I just moved back to California and only have state issued health coverage. This has SIGNIFICANTLY decreased my access to the best available health care. I’ve been limited to what’s available in my county and what kind of care I can receive. Midwife care is proven to result in healthier babies and safer birth experiences. However, often this care is only available to those who have money or the “right” insurance. Which means midwife care isn’t available to black women the same way it is available to white women. In the U.S. 1 in 7 black babies is born preterm and/or underweight. This is largely because of socio-economic factors related to limited access to proper health care, increased stress, and lifelong minority status.
I REFUSE to be another statistic even if that means having to pay nearly $4,000 I don’t have.
WHY MIDWIFE CARE?
Giving birth is a physically taxing process that can be very dangerous if one isn’t receiving proper care. A midwife specializes in pregnancy and the birth process. They believe child birth is a natural. Labor isn’t treated like a medical emergency and rarely results in a C-section or induced labor.
My midwife will provide a medical eye while working to ensure that I feel prepared for the physical challenges of birth and help to ensure that I remain as healthy as possible.
“Midwives recognize that clients are individuals and because of their personal, cultural, and religious beliefs, every birth experience is different. Midwifery care is ongoing and involves education, health promotion, social support, and clinical assessment. Midwifery encourages mind-body connections, recognizing the spiritual and emotional aspects of birth, allowing women to birth with strength and dignity.”
THIS IS URGENT
Paying out of pocket is the best option I have right now. Requesting a medical exemption from the state to get my care covered will take weeks and there is no guarantee I will receive an exemption. Pregnancy is very time bound I cannot wait for a state approval process before receiving care. I’m nearly half way through my pregnancy and I’ve only seen a doctor 3 times in Maryland. This is half the amount of appointment I should’ve had and getting seen in California has been an ongoing challenge.
I need to start my prenatal care as soon as possible. This makes your help crucial!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and considering helping. I’m so grateful to you!
