Help Me Ease a Family's Burden

I remember the day we met so vividly and didn’t realize our lives would never be the same.  We welcomed Elodia Reyes into our home to help us care for our 2 year old son and soon to be newborn.  She spent over three years helping care for our children like they were her own and became a part of our family.  She has a knack for caring for children and was capable of being anything she wanted to be… but she chose to be with us.   Her creativity, patience, and loving demeanor resides with our children today.  This past December, Elo called and said she was sick in the hospital.  She had been diagnosed with leukemia.  We were devastated.   

Devastated for us and her family.  In 1994, she moved from Honduras to marry her husband, Melvin Reyes. Over the years, she cared for a handful of families, which all grew into lifelong families for Elo.  No matter who or where Elo worked she always had her own children’s best interest in mind.  She has two son’s Melvin and William.  When Elo speaks of her boys her eyes light up.  They are her most prized possession.  She’s proud of the young men that they’ve grown into. 

Elo is one of the bravest people I’ve met and she has fought leukemia with grace and courage, never once complaining or giving up.  This week she had a bone marrow biopsy and the results were grim.  Elo has gone through multiple rounds of chemotherapy and was told on Thursday there are no more treatment options.  Elo will be returning home tomorrow to spend her remaining days with her family.
