Help me close the gap to attend Howard

Donation protected

Hi, I'm Nia, a recent graduate of the class of 2021. I was one of 2,300 students accepted to Howard University out of 29,000 applicants.  As part of the School of Business Executive Leadership honors program, I will major in marketing. In addition, I hope to expand my interests in film and communication.  After receiving my acceptance letter in April, I announced the news to my grandfather, who had told me several months earlier he dreamed of me going to Howard.  He paid for my registration as a graduation present.  He knew I worked really hard to keep a 3.9 GPA, participate in extracurricular activities and community service while working two jobs.   He said, "A little down payment for working so hard."  I laughed and thanked Papa for the gift.  Just before I graduated, papa was hospitalized.  On the day after I graduated from high school, my grandfather died.

My parents, grandparents, family, as well as my village in Omaha, Nebraska, taught me the value of education, hard work, and community.  As a result of their investment and encouragement, I succeeded academically once I moved to Georgia during high school and remained resilient during challenging times.

The cost of attendance is 48,200 at Howard per year.  However, I am still 5,000 short per semester even with my merit scholarship (over 4 years) and financial aid.   As of now, I am still waiting for scholarship decisions, which are not expected for several weeks and are not guaranteed.  My parent's job losses during Covid-19 prevent me from obtaining additional student loans for this year.   As a last resort, I am asking for your help.  Any amount helps close the remaining financial gap between tuition, fees, room, meals, books, supplies, and travel expenses.

This balance could lead to the cancellation of my registration. So this is an urgent plea.

It is a privilege to study at Howard University, which has produced some of the most influential Black scholars and historians. Thanks to your support, I will continue to pursue my academic career,  leadership development, and be of service in my community.  Most importantly honoring all that was poured into me from my family and my village.

With gratitude and in memory of Nana and Papa,

Nia
