Ciao a tutti!
Mi chiamo Riccardo e sono un giovane ingegnere aerospaziale con una sconfinata passione per l’esplorazione spaziale e con il grande sogno di diventare un astronauta!
Sono emozionato all’idea di condividere con voi l’esperienza che farò questa estate all’Università Internazionale dello Spazio!
Dopo aver superato un difficile processo di selezione, sono stato scelto come uno dei 120 candidati dello Space Studies Program che si terrà a Strasburgo i prossimi giugno, luglio e agosto. Sono un giovane studente e al momento sto completando la mia tesi in esplorazione spaziale presso Thales Alenia Space. TU Delft (Paesi Bassi) e il Politecnico di Milano sono le università che mi hanno cresciuto. Devo anche ringraziare Airbus-Germania per la formazione che mi hanno dato durante uno stage lo scorso anno. Nel tempo libero, quando non penso allo Spazio, mi diverto con sport e musica.
Ma che cosa è questa Università Internazionale dello Spazio?
La International Space University o ISU, questo il suo acronimo in inglese, è una facoltà altamente selettiva, con l’obiettivo di formare i futuri leader nel settore aerospaziale attraverso corsi mirati in un ambiente interculturale. Il programma vanta tra i suoi sostenitori le maggiori agenzie spaziali: NASA (Stati Uniti), ESA (Europa), l’Agenzia Spaziale Italiana ASI, CSA (Canada), JAXA (Giappone) e molte altre. Per quanto riguarda le aziende private spiccano i nomi di Boeing, Airbus e Lockheed Martin, per nominarne solo alcune.
Il programma prevede i seguenti dipartimenti:
- Applicazioni per lo spazio
- Ingegneria spaziale
- Attività umane nello spazio
- Management di attività spaziali
- Politiche ed economia in ambito spaziale
- Scienza e fisica dello spazio
Forse, arrivati fin qui, mi conoscete un poco e potreste aver indovinato che il mio desiderio di diventare un astronauta mi porterà a scegliere il dipartimento di attività umane nello spazio. Qui avrò l’occasione di simulare una attività extraveicolare, EVA in gergo tecnico, dove è richiesto agli astronauti di lasciare l’ambiente della navicella spaziale per avventurarsi nel vuoto dello spazio nella loro tuta spaziale.
L’ho preferito agli altri dipartimenti perché ritengo che il mio percorso di studi (a TU Delft e al Politecnico di Milano, rispettivamente al 4° e 7° posto nelle classifiche internazionali QS Rankings ) e le attività con Skyward , un'associazione studentesca con l’obiettivo di costruire e lanciare razzi sonda, mi abbiano già dato le basi che mi servono in quei settori.
Partecipare al programma questa estate sarebbe davvero un sogno per me!
Significherebbe seguire le orme di astronauti che un tempo erano studenti della ISU, come Jessica Meir che volerà sulla Stazione Spaziale Internazionale ISS a settembre questo anno, Yi So-yeon, la prima coreana nello spazio, James Newman, quattro missioni a bordo dello Space Shuttle (il mio veicolo spaziale preferito!).
Mi stavo quasi dimenticando di dirvi chi è il rettore della università… le sue impronte le trovate impresse sulla luna, e appartengono a niente meno che Buzz Aldrin, astronauta dell’Apollo 11!
Vi state emozionando?? Io sono già molto emozionato!!
Recentemente sono stato invitato a partecipare al programma ma è davvero molto, molto, molto costoso, direi astronomicamente costoso in realtà =), ma stiamo parlando di spazio in fin dei conti, non è così? L’ammontare delle spese per il programma della durata di due mesi è di 18.500€ che includono le spese di partecipazione al programma, vitto e alloggio.
La mia prima mossa è stata di cercare borse di studio e sono riuscito a vincere un bando per una borsa di studio di 12.000€ dell’ESA, l’Agenzia Spaziale Europea. E questo è già un ottimo inizio!
Mi restano da trovare ancora 6.500€ ed è per questo motivo che mi serve il vostro aiuto.

Hi! My name is Riccardo and I am a young rocket scientist and space enthusiast with the big dream of becoming an astronaut!
I am thrilled to share with you my experience at the International Space University, this summer 2019!
Out of a large number of applicants, I am one of the 120 space enthusiasts that have been selected for the Space Studies Program held at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France in 2019. I am a young professional writing my MSc thesis in space exploration at Thales Alenia Space. I have worked at Airbus as an intern and studied at TU Delft and Politecnico of Milan. My biggest passion is Space but I also enjoy sports and music.
So, what is this International Space University all about?
The International Space University is a highly selective university, with the goal to develop the future leaders of the world space community by providing interdisciplinary educational programs to space professionals in an international, intercultural environment. The program is supported by the major space agencies: NASA from the US, ESA from Europe, CSA from Canada, JAXA from Japan and many others, as well as a large number of private industries of the likes of Boeing, Airbus and Lockheed Martin just to name a few.
The program is characterized by different departments, where different space-related topics are studied in further depth while the core courses are common to all the participants.

By now, you know me a little and you might have guessed that, because of my determination to be a future astronaut, I will choose the Human Performance in Space Department. Among the different activities, this department also includes a simulation of extravehicular activity or EVA, an operation during which astronauts venture outside the Spacecraft, floating in the vacuum of space in their spacesuit.
I decided not to pick an engineering, science or management department because I feel I already have developed those skills during my university studies (TU Delft and Politecnico of Milan, 4th and 7th in QS Rankings ), experiences in companies (internships at Airbus and Thales Alenia Space, the 2 major players in the European Space sector) and extracurricular activities (sounding rocket team, Skyward ).
Attending the two month course this summer would mean so much to me! I would be following in the footsteps of three alumni of the International Space University that are now astronauts: Jessica Meir, scheduled to launch to the International Space Station on board Soyuz MS-15 in September 2019, Yi So-yeon, the first Korean to fly in space and James Newman, who flew on four Space Shuttle missions (my favorite space vehicle!!!).
Oh! I forgot to tell you who is the Chancellor of the university. His footprints are on the moon and they belong to Buzz Aldrin!
Are you excited yet? I certainly am!
I was recently invited to attend the program but it is very, very, very expensive, astronomically really =), but we are talking of Space after all, right?
The total expenses for the two month program are 18,500€ (20,800 USD) and include tuition fees, board and lodging.
So first thing I did was to apply for scholarships and I was awarded 12,000€ (13,500 USD) by the European Space Agency. Good news!!
This leaves me short of 6,500€ (7,370 USD) and for this reason I need your help.

Why support this project?
With your contribution you will be supporting the career of a young rocket scientist, space engineer and enthusiast with the big dream of becoming an astronaut. Your contribution will be added to 12,000€ (13,500 USD) that have been awarded by the European Space Agency (ESA). The program has provided top class education to astronauts James Newman (NASA) Jessica Meir (NASA) and Yi So-yeon (KAP) and can list top space figures such as Arthur C. Clarke and Buzz Aldrin, respectively past and present Chancellors of the faculty.
By supporting me in the program, I will share with you my experience and tell you all what I have learnt and think about the new hype for Space exploration. We live in a new, exciting age of space exploration, with private companies entering the race, alongside space agencies, all with the goal of leaving the first human footprints on the surface of Mars. Attending the program, I will have the chance to meet the current leaders of the aerospace sector and current astronauts, so I can share with you my thoughts and impressions of these amazing people.
