Help MD Immigrants with DACA Fees

On September 5, 2017, United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would be rescinded. DACA was established in 2012 by President Obama and allows certain young people, called “Dreamers,” who were brought to the U.S. as children protection from immediate deportation as well as eligibility for employment authorization. DACA recipients could receive this “deferred action” for a period of two years, which was subject to renewal. As of the September 5 announcement, no new applications for initial DACA requests are being accepted.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will process DACA renewal applications until March 5, 2018. DACA holders with expiration dates valid until March 5th must send in their renewal applications NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 5TH, 2017. That means it is imperative that we help our friends and neighbors who are DACA holders NOW.
The mandatory and nonwaivable DACA renewal fee is $495. This fee can present a hardship for some families, and if they are not able to come up with the amount in the next few weeks, their DACA status or that of their children could expire within the next few months, leaving them vulnerable to deportation and without work authorization, meaning that they will return to living in fear and in the shadows.
***Area immigration non-profits will be holding will be hosting renewal clinics in Baltimore to assist individuals with their DACA renewal applications. The Latino Racial Justice Circle is raising funds to help individuals who need assistance paying this $495 DACA renewal fee. This is a quick campaign; we will be raising funds through Sunday September 17 to provide the legal experts time to process as many application before the October 5 deadline. In Maryland there are approximately 1,500 Dreamers that are eligible to renew their DACA.
If you are outraged by Trump’s decision to end DACA, this is an immediate and critical way you can show support to your immigrant friends and neighbors. Please support our efforts and make a donation to this campaign. We are setting the goal at $1,000 but we hope to raise much more than that, to help as many DACA holders are possible. If we raise so much money that there are funds leftover after the clinics (which would be amazing!), the money will be donated back to the general funds of the Latino Racial Justice Circle.

We are working toward breaking down barriers and increasing communication/understanding between different groups in our community. We also do specific projects to support the Latino and immigrant communities. We have used funds we raised to sponsor Latino youth in summer educational and leadership programs, helped individuals with immigration legal fees, and donated money to the Esperanza Center Immigration Legal Services.
