Hi everyone, I’m Cole Gier—writing on behalf of my husband, Matt.

Matt is only 38 years old, and we’re almost certain he has some form of dementia. He’s already had an MRI that shows brain atrophy in all lobes of his brain. As I write this, he’s undergoing a spinal tap to test for Alzheimer’s and related conditions.

But the one test that every doctor, disability office, and specialist keeps asking for?

It’s called a neuropsychological evaluation.

What is that, and why does it matter?

A neuropsych eval is an in-depth series of tests that show how Matt’s brain is functioning day-to-day. It goes beyond imaging or bloodwork—it maps things like memory, reasoning, language, attention, and emotion. It identifies what parts of his brain are impacted, and how.

It’s the gold standard for diagnosing dementia, cognitive decline, and many neurological conditions.

Without it, we can’t access proper treatment plans. We can’t get him on disability. We can’t even get a formal diagnosis.

The problem?

His insurance only covers this test at one facility—KU Medical—and the earliest available appointment they offered us was December 1st.

We’ve already been waiting since March.

And we’ve watched his memory, his reasoning, and his independence decline in that time.

We can’t wait four more months.

So we’re asking for help.

If we can raise $2,800, we can pay out of pocket to get the test done within weeks, not months.

Why we’re fundraising:

I’ve been holding our household together emotionally and financially, but this is beyond what I can manage on my own. I work part-time, I’m his caregiver, and I’m trying to navigate all the red tape and slow-moving systems that make this already-devastating process harder.

This test opens the door to support we desperately need—before we lose more time.
