Help Mary Walls Recover

Donation protected
From Trez Buckland, friend and fellow UW colleague:
I have known my friend, Mary Walls, since the early 1990s.  She has a rare condition called Polycythemia Vera. With Polycythemia Vera a person’s bone marrow produces too many red blood cells. The only cure for this condition is a stem cell transplant. Mary has worked with the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center and will be going in for a transplant mid-October. The costs associated with transplantation are overwhelming. Although she has insurance, there are many costs not covered such as dental care, transportation to and from appointments and housing needs. Mary has been unemployed for four years and now due to this condition is unable to work, therefore finances are difficult.

Her spirits are high and she holds on to hope. Please donate to help with dental, medical co-pays, travel to and from her medical appointments, and living expenses while she is recovering. Our goal to help prepare for her transplant and promote her recovery is $10,000. Her expected treatment date is October 17th. Dental work, not covered by insurance, needs to be completed prior to that date. Funds are needed immediately! She will be in the hospital five weeks and the anticipated recovery time is three months after that before she can return to work. She also welcomes your prayers!

Mary Walls is a Public Health Educator who has been involved in service work since she was a young child in Girl Scouts. She has worked for Girls Clubs of America, The Seattle/King County Department of Public Health, The Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center, and the University of Washington Schools of Nursing, Public Health and Medicine in roles in service to humanity. She has been a great teacher and mentor to the students with whom she has worked. She has always been kind and generous with her time when working with others. One medical student once introduced Mary to another medical student as “…the most awesome professor at the University.”

Mary’s goal while she is in recovery is to continue to give back to the community. She shared with me an exciting and needed curriculum she has designed to help children heal from abuse. She is already exploring funding options for finalizing and implementing this curriculum.

Mary and I will keep you updated on her progress, via her Facebook page, as she navigates this journey!
