Help Mary Stathos take on the fight against Alpha

Help Mary Stathos and the Alpha Tenants Union take on the fight against Anwar Faisal and Alpha Management and protect the right to organize.
Alpha Management is trying to stop their tenants from organizing and we need your help.
In October 2020, after months of trying to get Alpha Management to fix some maintenance issues in my apartment, I started talking to my neighbors. I heard the same stories time and time again – broken appliances, mold, pests – and time and time again these neighbors were ignored just like I was.
We began to organize. Through the support of the Greater Boston Tenants Union, we talked to members of our building and wrote Alpha Management a letter demanding better living conditions. We passed out flyers with reports of Alpha’s previous behavior and notorious media reports including being labeled Boston’s worst landlord by Boston Magazine.
Through months of organizing, both in my own building and others around the Greater Boston area, we began to see small changes. The trash piled up in the fire exit was removed. The basement floor was fixed. An apartment was renovated. But our work still wasn’t over. As we continued to talk to more tenants, we continued to hear stories and were and still are compelled to take a stand as tenants and exercise our right to organize and to have safe and healthy living conditions.
It appears that Alpha doesn’t like these changes. On April 17, 2021, they sent me and the Alpha Tenants Union a letter to cease and desist and to stop all organizing. They had copies of all of the materials we had given out, press coverage, and statements made at public hearings. They are claiming slander and libel and want me to publicly retract all of these statements. If I don’t they are threatening to take me and the union to court. I will not be singled out or scapegoated for the negligence of my landlord.
It is illegal for landlords to retaliate against tenants for organizing and it is time for us to take a stand against Alpha and show them that we aren’t backing down.
Unfortunately, this is a big case and we need a private lawyer. Fortunately, we have found Jeff Feuer, who has experience with cases of this nature and is excited to join in this fight with us, but in order to work with him, we need money and we are asking for your help.
This is not the first time a tenants union has tried to organize in Alpha buildings. The Boston Inspectional Services even called him a “frequent flyer” in their department in a 2014 article written by the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team. This is a huge challenge and we need community support to not let him win this time around.
