Help Mary Heal After a Devastating Fall

Our dad will not be comfortable with our asking for help and it is needed.

On April 15th, our mom, Mary, suffered a severe fall that resulted in a broken tibia and fibula. The injury was so serious that doctors had to perform an emergency external fixator surgery—where four rods were inserted into her leg to stabilize the bones while the swelling goes down. This is just the beginning of a long road to recovery.

Because of the risk of infection and the delicate positioning of the rods, Mary now requires 24/7 care. She can’t be left alone—even for a short time—as any accidental movement could cause serious complications or dislodge the hardware.

Mary is also living with early-onset dementia, which makes her recovery even more complex. Her cognitive challenges mean she may not fully understand the limitations of her condition or remember the precautions she needs to take. Having someone by her side at all times isn’t just important—it’s essential for her safety and healing.

Once the swelling in her leg subsides (usually after 4–6 weeks), she’ll undergo another surgery to install permanent rods. After that, she’ll begin several months of physical therapy, during which she’ll be confined to a wheelchair and bed for at least three months.

She’s currently in the hospital and will remain there for at least 8 days. The hospital is an hour and a half drive each way, and each round trip costs about $50 in gas. Once she’s home, she’ll need special equipment and continued, full-time care.

Mary is the most giving and compassionate person we know. She’s the heart of our family—the best mom and grandma anyone could ask for. She’s spent her life putting others first, and now she needs our help.

We’re doing everything we can, but the financial burden of surgeries, transportation, home care, medical equipment, and ongoing support is overwhelming. We’re reaching out to ask for help so we can focus on getting her the care she needs and deserves.
