Help Markia Become an Attorney!

Donation protected
*My message is rather long, but I wanted to share my story with you all. To summarize, I need financial assistance to help pay for a bar exam prep course, so that I can pass the bar and finally become an attorney after dreaming about it since the 4th grade.

I did it! I graduated from high school, Duke University, and UCLA School of Law. For many, these are amazing accomplishments, but especially for someone that comes from an impoverished Midwestern community and single-parent home of six. Though my upbringing could only be characterized as financially disadvantaged, it was filled with love and intellectual stimulation thanks to my amazing mother. My mother also taught me to be resourceful, which has certainly led to my success, as I was always able to find activities to challenge myself. At every stage of my education I did well and left my mark on the institution.

However, this did not stop individuals/institutions from doubting my capabilities. One of my most salient memories during the college application process was a conditional acceptance from the University of Southern California. Though the institution would “love” for me to round out their 2013 class profile, I would have to participate in an “at-risk” student program for the first-year. Now, it would have been different if I had a choice, as a first-generation college student, additional resources can go a long way. However, I had no choice. I felt insulted, offended, demeaned, and belittled. I have always excelled academically and have never needed anyone to hold my hand. This left me feeling that the institution did not have faith in my abilities, and I refused to let their lack of confidence in me affect my confidence in myself.  Fortunately, neither Duke University nor the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, had such a requirement. In addition, my acceptance to these institutions came along with the assurance that I would pay nothing.

But long story short, as we all know upper-education is extremely expensive. Professional certifications are as well. Somehow I was miraculously able to finance my education on my own through scholarships, grants, financial aid, and loans, but with my inability to secure a personal loan, financing the bar exam and associated expenses feels impossible. The expense break-down for the Georgia bar exam is below:

$1200 – Character and Fitness Application + Miscellaneous Fees

$2,524.62 – Bar Prep Course

$542 – Bar Exam Fee + Laptop Usage Fee

The character and fitness application is already paid for and the bar exam fee is feasible. I am asking that you help me finance the bar prep course, which is necessary for success. The company requires that you pay the entire fee or very large lumps sums, neither of which is possible at this time. I am a very independent person, and usually figure out ways to handle things on my own. But when you really need help, you should ask for it. My first lump sum of $1,262.31 is due on 12/16/17, while the second lump sum is due 1/16/18. Please give if you can, it would be greatly appreciated, every dollar counts. Thank you!
