Help Mark Lane Hit a "Home" Run

2018 has been a rough year for our friend Mark Lane and his family. Unfortunately, on May 23rd, Mark’s right leg had to be amputated when the artery suddenly became so blocked it stopped all the blood flow to his leg below the knee. Mark was in the hospital and rehabilitation facility for 50 days. In January of 2018, Mark had been hospitalized for 26 days for complications with his leg as well. Shortly before Mark’s amputation, his wife Debbie lost her mother unexpectedly, and her father was placed in an assisted living facility. It has been a harrowing few months.
Mark and Debbie have dedicated themselves to helping kids and the elderly. Mark will finish his second four-year term on the PVUSD governing board in December; he is not seeking re-election in order to focus on his health and family. Mark has been a District Administrator for Little League for 13 years and a part of Little League for 37 years. Debbie is a social worker and volunteers as a swim official. Kelsie is a sophomore at ASU, volunteers for the ASU booster group “942” and enjoys supporting sports at ASU while maintaining a 3.7 GPA.
Mark’s life has been forever changed by the loss of his leg. From enduring ongoing medical treatment and healing, to adjusting to reduced mobility, his daily life presents new realities and challenges. So many things we all take for granted – getting into and out of our home, washing our hands at a sink, sleeping in our own bed – became obstacles for Mark overnight.
Their two-story home has carpeting throughout except the kitchen and bathrooms which makes using the wheelchair difficult and tiring. They have rearranged Mark’s home office on the first floor to accommodate a bed for him. Mark’s physical therapist has recommended the first floor carpeting be replaced with hard flooring. In addition, the downstairs bathroom needs to be modified to improve accessibility and safety for Mark.
The Lane family would like to replace the first floor carpeting with economical and low maintenance hard flooring for easier and safer wheelchair access (and hopefully one day, a prosthetic leg) and modify the downstairs bathroom: widen the doorway, remove two sinks and vanity and replace it with a sink Mark can roll the wheelchair under, install accessible storage, and allow easier access to the bathtub/shower.
This has been a difficult time for them as they adjust to a new way of life and work to keep up with the medical bills on top of regular expenses. They have been hesitant to seek help but realized they need to do few things around the home to help with Mark’s quality of life. The Lane family has a long history of giving back and volunteering to benefit kids in the community. In honor and appreciation of their decades of service, we want to give back to them in their time of need.
They have consulted with professional contractors; it is estimated to be approximately $20,000 to complete these home modifications. All monies donated to this campaign will go directly to pay for these modifications and Mark’s medical needs not covered by insurance.
