Help Malik Graduate from WSU

Malik Johnson is a senior at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, and will be graduating this December. He’s pursuing a dual degree for a BS in Earth and Environmental Sciences for Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Sciences and a BA in Foreign Languages and Culture in Spanish. He is a member of the Blackfeet Tribe and graduated from Chief Leschi Schools. Malik attended Chief Leschi for 12+ years and is known and loved by many. He is a former student of mine. I taught him Language Arts when he was in the 8th grade and again during his senior year. Malik needs a wraparound and support right now as he goes into his final semester of college.
Malik is an extremely independent and driven student. He is one of Chief Leschi‘s success stories. During his senior year, he wrote an essay about how he wanted to finish college so he could show future Chief Leschi graduates that it can be done through hard work and perseverance. Malik is setting an example for his younger family, friends, and the youth of our Native American community. He has a huge personality. He is not one to ask for help, but he needs it now.
Malik needs funds to secure a place to live in Pullman for his final semester. School starts on Monday, August 20, and even though he doesn’t have anywhere to stay, he plans to return to school anyway. He told me, “I'll sleep in a sleeping bag in the stacks at the library if I have to. I'm getting out of Pullman if it's the last thing I do.” I am so in awe of Malik’s drive to graduate and cannot wait for the day he crosses that stage at WSU. Even more exciting is that after graduation, Malik plans to enter the Peace Corps and hopes to be assigned to a country where he can use his dual language skills.
This week, Malik’s father was involved in a horrible motorcycle accident in Atlanta where he lives. Malik left his job at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium early so he could fly with his brother to be at his father’s side. His father is still in critical condition, but Malik plans to fly home to go to Pullman and begin school as close to on time as he can.
Malik has been fortunate enough to have most of his WSU tuition paid for over the years, but has struggled to always find funding for room and board. In previous semesters, he has couch-surfed with friends, but those friends have now graduated and he’s on his own. This fundraiser’s amount is set to ensure Malik can afford a place to rent from now until graduation, eat, and fly back to see his father in Atlanta, if necessary.
