Alright, gather round. I'll tell you the story of how one year beat the pride out of the Primes enough to make them actually ask for help.
At the end of 2016 Spyder had sunk $8k into his Dodge Magnum and for all the credit card debt he had accumulated, when it broke down again we came to our limit with the car. Spyder needed a new one but that couldn't happen without clearing his credit card debt first. So, we made some sacrifices, we pooled some resources, we lived a TERRIBLY boring life for several months and between the two of us, we cleared the debt.
In April, Spyder purchased his first brand new vehicle that was all his own.
In June our AC failed us. Anyone in Florida knows that AC is not something you can just live without in the summer time. Further more we had a bathtub to replace. So we took out a 12k loan and went to work... Except the more we tried to fix the tub, the worse it got. Water damage had been done to the walls, and to the downstairs bathroom. The more we tried to fix, the more damage we found. The loan we pulled wasn't enough to cover it all so, yet again, we had to scramble to find money to cover what our loan couldn't. One of our bathrooms is still torn apart.
In September, Hurricane Irma battered the siding of our house. We thought we escaped with little damage, but while working on the bathoom, our friend was able to actually poke a hole through our wall and peer outside. Our siding is hanging on by a thread and won't make it another hurricane season. Luckily we had some help from relief sources and had planned to cover the rest with tax returns and credit cards. We were stretching it thin, but we were making it work.
.... And then Thanksgiving happened. On our way up to North Carolina to visit Spyder's parents we found ourselves on a winding country back road with poor sign placement and a blind intersection. Spyder saw the stop sign last second and locked up his breaks (likely saving my life) but we hit the back of another car, spinning her around and ripping the front of our car apart. His first brand new car that he worked so hard for is now totaled and, having never been in a major accident before, he had not thought to purchase gap insurance. So, we're in the hole for another $7k. We are in the same exact position we were in this time last year. Several thousand dollars in debt to a car that we can't drive. We might be able to juggle a few things here or there but it's a temporary fix and he needs a reliable car. We can't have a reliable car and a 7k debt on top of the loan and the siding and the drained savings accounts.
We're beat. We've done it too many time and I don't know how to make it work. So, we're selling our pride and reaching out for the first time, asking our friends and family for help. We know all of you have difficult situations as well which is why it's so hard to ask. We're not even asking for the full amount. Just whatever little bit can be spared, IF you can spare it. Any drop in the bucket at this point would be a pound off our shoulders.
We're planning to go through our house and see what we can sell. We will probably do a yard sale at some point, and there is serious talks about doing a benefit concert in a few months which will likely include several games and prizes and goodies, (anyone that's gone to a Triple Sixer's show or Spyder's birthday concerts.... which would be a Triple Sixers show.... knows how fun they can be).
So, that's it. That's where we're at. We're both the type of people to prefer keeping our personal problems private but we're at a dead end here. As hard as it is to ask, we need help, even if it's a little bit.
