<div>If you have had the pleasure of meeting Luke, you know he’s the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back, someone who shows up without hesitation, makes you laugh when you need it most, and stand by your side no matter what. Most would say he is wise beyond his years despite being only 23 years old.

<div>Luke is the person who would drop everything to help someone else, and the one who makes people feel cared for just by being around him. He has always put others before himself, and anyone who knows him can tell you how deeply he loves and supports the people in his life.

<div>Just months ago, he was living a full, active life spending his time outdoors, fishing, hunting, and doing what he does best, making people laugh. He was the local mechanic who everyone would bring their car to for a tune up and some sort of story about a crazy adventure he had recently. Everything changed in an instant when Luke was involved in a devastating accident that caused a severe traumatic brain injury.

<div>In the beginning, Luke was in a coma and fighting just to survive. Doctors explained that the type of injury Luke suffered is one of the most serious forms of brain injury, often leaving patients with very limited chances of meaningful recovery. We were told he would never regain consciousness.

<div>But Luke has been fighting every single day.
</div>

</div>
<div>Over the past several months, he has made progress that has brought hope where there once was so much uncertainty. He is doing things now that we were told he would never do again in his life. He has gone from being completely unresponsive to now showing signs of awareness, emotions and connection. Luke is steadily regaining consciousness, following commands, communicating and continuing to show progress.

<div>Recently, he has started doing incredible things like identifying common objects as well as showing that he knows how to use them appropriately, and making efforts to speak. These moments may seem small, but in brain injury recovery, they are powerful signs that Luke is still here, still fighting, and still working his way back.

<div>Luke’s journey is far from over. He requires ongoing specialized medical care, rehabilitation, and support to continue making progress. Programs that focus on recovery from disorders of consciousness can make a critical difference in helping patients like Luke regain more independence and quality of life.

<div>His recovery will be long and remains unpredictable.
</div>

<div>Luke does not have a large support system. He lost his mother three years ago and otherwise does not have much family. He relies heavily on me (his sister) as well as the few people who are able to be there for him, advocating for his care and cheering him on through every step forward. The emotional and financial strain of this journey is overwhelming, and we are asking for help.
