Just a few days before Christmas, our neighbor and friend Lou Melillo was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Shortly after the holidays, his condition required immediate hospitalization at Hackensack Hospital, where he is expected to remain for four to six weeks undergoing intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments as this is an aggressive form of cancer. Doctors believe the leukemia may be at an advanced stage, making this an especially challenging and uncertain time for Lou and his family.

Big Lou has always been someone who shows up for others. He’s a familiar and friendly face on the sidelines of the Hopatcong Warriors and Hopatcong Chiefs, proudly supporting his son Anthony (USAF) and daughter Jordan and cheering on all the kids in our community. He’s always been an advocate for local youth and a steady presence at community events.

Lou’s wife, Maryann, is also well known throughout town. She has faithfully served the borough as a crossing guard for over 20 years, helping keep our children safe day in and day out. She is also unofficially Elba Points Community watch!!

Together, Lou and Maryann have given so much to this community, and now they find themselves needing support. With their blessing I was given permission to reach out to the community.

As many families in New Jersey know, it often takes two incomes to make ends meet. With Lou unable to work and Maryann balancing work, hospital visits, and family responsibilities, the financial strain is significant. Medical bills, travel expenses, and everyday costs continue to add up.
