2020 Impact Statement

On the heels of this singularly terrible year, Bushwick Daily needs your help.

Through the pandemic, primaries, protests and everything else, Bushwick Daily's reporters and editors were committed to producing neighborhood news that informs, enlightens and uplifts. Our work was done as we faced our own hardships.

Like so many of our friends and loved ones, Bushwick Daily starts 2021 bowed but not broken. We’re clear-eyed about the challenges that lie ahead for our city, for our neighbors, for Bushwick Daily’s fellow local businesses. For all that is to come, we want to be here for you.

We want to cover the impact, in Bushwick, of vaccine distribution rollout, New York state’s rapidly evolving eviction policies and the coming round of small business loans. We want to bring you stories of Bushwick residents’ extraordinary resilience and courage; to solemnize local tragedies and celebrate, when they arrive, turning points signalling the end of the pandemic and the end of the related downturn.

We want to be your faithful correspondents, helping you make sense of how decisions in Washington, Albany, City Hall and corporate boardrooms affect life in our own corner of north Brooklyn. But we can’t do it without you.

If you are able, please consider becoming a monthly paying contributor. Support us and join the fight to save local journalism.

We want to earn your support. To show you we plan to do that in the coming year, we took a look back at our work in 2020 to see what we wrote, and what you read. We believe the stories speak for themselves and show how we served our readers during an unprecedented crisis.

Below, we’ve identified the five major story categories our top 100 stories fell into. Take a look for yourselves—we hope you’ll agree with us that they show our impact and convince you to become a sustaining Bushwick Daily member so we can continue to earn your readership in 2021.

We are so grateful for your support of this campaign. Help us to reach sustainability by becoming a monthly paid supporter on our website . We can only exist with your support!

Independent local journalism is an essential service, now more than ever. And we need your help to keep the coverage coming in 2021.

Without 400 paid subscribers by March 1, Bushwick Daily won’t be able to keep the lights on. If you value local journalism and want to see our coverage continue, please consider becoming a paid subscriber, donating to our campaign or sharing this campaign with your network.

Hello Bushwick Daily readers, fans, and family.

I hope you’re doing well during these difficult and confusing times. We’re residing in one of the most severely affected areas in the world, awaiting updates minute to minute as to the state of our daily lives.

Most of you are tuning in now more than ever to Bushwick Daily for local news, and many of you have reached out in the past few days asking how to extend support. We sincerely thank you.

If you have the means, we ask that you donate to the Bushwick Daily 2020 Emergency Journalism Fund. The COVID-19 crisis directly impacts our ability to support our amazing writers, as advertisers (many of whom are also local business owners) and previously anticipated funding and contracts have gone on hiatus.

The funds raised here will increase the rate of pay for our writers and assist in covering overhead costs so that we can continue bringing you the stories that matter.

Now is a crucial period for local journalism in Brooklyn. We’re in the midst of a global health crisis and also an election year. Immediate financial support allows us to continue delivering coverage and resources in your area regarding COVID-19, as well as informing on the 2020 local primaries , zoning , organizing , and the 2020 Census .

And of course, we also want to continue reporting on the coolest shows, art, music, restaurants, bars, culturally diverse gatherings, LGTBQ+ community , and other social events  (even as they occur remotely). Our North Brooklyn neighborhood is a place we are proud to call home, and we strive to bring you information that assists in engagement with the community we all love.

But if we aren’t able to raise these funds in the next few weeks to replace our lost revenue, we will be forced to reduce our reporting indefinitely, and the longevity of Bushwick Daily will be put detrimentally at risk.

PS: While we'd be very grateful for you to donate to this cause, we want you to know that there are many ways to additionally bolster our mission at this time:
