I spent my 2012 summer in a Guatemalan clinic ASSADE that was critical to the local health of the town of San Andres Itzapa. Critical to their mission is providing free healthcare to the entire community regardless of ability to pay. From my time there, I saw the amazing work they did in a multifactorial approach: from disease prevention, community education, to primary care, and even providing some surgical capabilities. They are among the first clinics in Guatemala to provide free water purifiers and closed stoves to the entire community. They play a key part in the community and COVID has brought them a unique challenge. The creators of the charity recently sent me the following message:  "Since a year ago due to Covid-19, we are receiving more patients than usual. What happens is that Covid-19 affected the community's economy so families have more difficulty in accessing health care. As ASSADE is one of the most important places where communities seek adequate health care, we are having trouble with our sustainability. As one of our main pillars is to provide health care without any payment for anyone looking for care, we are helping people no matter what. The recent increase of patients has increased our patient capacity to higher than our facility can cover. This is why we need emergency funds. The funds will be used to cover health care to the most needed persons, especially children, women, and people with chronic diseases. This means that we are going to use part of the funds to acquire medications and supplies for the clinics. We  will use part of the funds to provide the population with cleaning and disinfectant supplies."
