Aiding local Welfare charities in the PH

We are QMUL’s Filipino Society. Many of the problems we see back home are mainly, streamed on social media; having seen all the videos and having read the different stories, we are all devastated by the effects of COVID-19 as well as, our most recent natural disaster, Typhoon Ulysses.

Our priority is to support the Philippines in any way we can.

We thought we'd start a fundraiser to address the on-going problems back home. Specifically, gaps in the Education system, disparities in Healthcare and the urgency of the Global Warming Crisis.

BACKGROUND
Education

As we are all aware, COVID-19 has forced different countries to implement new ways of working, studying and socialising. The PH Department of Education has rightfully, implemented a blended approach whereby students are provided with Asynchronous, Synchronous and Self-learning module(SLM) material. SLM is incorporated for students who have no access to internet or gadgets. Instead, they are provided with printed learning resources.

However, there are pupils who need to;
- pay for travel expenses to submit their SLM assignments
- find reliable gadgets to facilitate online learning
- find strong internet connection to access learning materials

All of which are increasing household expenses and risk students leaving school because of technical issues and not because they aren't driven to learn.

Healthcare
It's also important to address existing healthcare inequalities. Inequalities such that communities in rural areas and urban slums have less access to medical facilities; this could be from the lack of care facilities in these areas combined with the expenses of healthcare which cannot always be funded.

To give an example, infant mortality is highest in disadvantaged urban areas. The point we are making is, no child should have to suffer the consequences of inequities in the healthcare system.

Global warming
Finally, the frequency of natural disasters is on a rise which asks the question; Why are Typhoons, Cyclones and Earthquakes becoming more common?

We want to bring awareness to the direct effects of Global warming on the Philippines.

Our country bares the brunt of Climate Change adversity; we aim to reduce risks which make the Philippines more prone to natural disasters.

AIM:
We're fundraising for all of these causes and will split the money across local charities we think will benefit most from our contribution

We can't deny that starting at a local level will help make improvements on a national level.

NVC
We've been in touch with them as a recipient for our project - they will advocate for pupils who need the support for their studies, allocate school supplies and partner with the PH DepED to see which communities are most in need.

HARIBON FOUNDATION
This organisation focuses on "rainforestation" to replenish the ecosystems in the Philippines by planting a range of native trees. Their agenda is to maintain the natural wilderness but as a result, replace carbon dioxide with oxygen to reduce green house gases.

HEALTH FUTURES FOUNDATION
Hfi is a foundation that helps disadvantaged communities by ensuring they have access to necessary health services.
