 On September 10, 2026, my 21-year-old daughter, Leah, was involved in a serious car accident with her brother that totaled my vehicle. Both were taken to the trauma unit. Thankfully, her brother suffered only minor injuries. Leah was found to have a fractured rib, internal bruising, and other injuries from the crash. She was sent home less than 24 hours later, and we believed we were beginning a difficult but manageable recovery.

 At home, Leah continued vomiting dark brown bile, and we called paramedics to take her back to the hospital. That return changed everything. We were told Leah had sepsis, and her condition became critical. Since then, she has suffered severe complications involving her lungs, kidneys, blood, and abdomen. She has undergone major abdominal surgery to open and wash out her abdomen, had drainage tubes placed on both sides of her chest, undergone multiple bronchoscopies, and required a ventilator and deep sedation. She is also on ECMO, a life-support machine helping oxygenate her blood while her lungs recover. What began as a car accident became a fight for her life.

 Leah is a sweet, structured, hardworking 21-year-old college student who had been working, building her future, and making plans for her life. Today, she remains critically ill in the ICU, surrounded by machines and a medical team working tirelessly to help her heal.

 As her mother, I have stepped away from work to remain by Leah’s side while also caring for my family, including my 9-year-old daughter with autism. We don’t know how long Leah’s recovery will take or what the weeks ahead will bring.
