Help fund the May 14, 2022 North Florida Soap Box Derby local race!
On May 14th we will hold a local soap box derby race. This local race will comprised of kids, ages 7 -18, racing soap box derby cars. The top finisher earns a spot in the All-American Soap Box Derby Championships in Akron, OH this July and a chance to win a college scholarship.
In order to hold the race, we need to raise $3,000. All money raised will be used to pay for the race sanction fee and insurance (costs $1,600), the rental of street barricades and road closure signs (costs $650), a Professional Engineer to draft and certify a Maintenance of Traffic Plan (costs $250), a porta potty (costs $105), law enforcement, lunch and Gatorade for volunteers, and the trophies for the top eight finishes and each kid who participates.
North Florida and Tallahassee have had a long tradition of Soap Box Derby racing and has produced national champions. However, all that came to an end in 2016 when the Tallahassee Region Soap Box Derby, Inc. voluntarily dissolved. My wife and I learned this unfortunate reality when we tried to introduce our seven-year-old son to derby racing. We also learned there is no derby racing anywhere in north Florida. The closest racing city is in the central Florida area.
In February of 2021, my wife and I took action and signed an agreement with the All-American Soap Box Derby headquarters in Akron, OH to start a new club. We formed North Florida Soap Box Derby, Inc., a new not-for-profit, officially licensed derby racing club here in Tallahassee and had our first event last June. The May 14th event will be our 2nd annual North Florida Soap Box Derby race, or last depending on our raising enough money to put on the race.
