Help L.A. County Hospitals Fight COVID-19

Donation protected
My name is Theodore Berger and I am a junior at Santa Monica High School. I have partnered with classmate Nicole Thomson to raise money to directly purchase and deliver personal protection equipment to hospitals in L.A. county. We have noticed the devastation COVID-19 has caused in New York City and recognized that Los Angeles County could experience a similar catastrophe due to both areas being heavily populated. Therefore, we are asking for donations of any amount to provide Los Angeles' healthcare workers with the equipment they need.

We want to particularly focus on providing equipment for two hospitals that have been on the forefront of treating COVID-19 in Los Angeles: Martin Luther King Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Martin Luther King Medical Center has been at the forefront of fighting coronavirus to the best of their abilities in South L.A.'s vulnerable community. However, due to the shortage of available tests and L.A. county allocating supplies to larger hospitals with better trauma centers, MLK Medical Center cannot reliably determine the number of COVID-19 cases in the South L.A. community. Many of those living in South L.A. also have underlying health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, which can cause further complications and more severe symptoms if that individual contracts COVID-19.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is one of Los Angeles County's largest hospitals and is equipped with a Level I trauma center, meaning they can provide the highest level of care of trauma patients. This means that Cedars-Sinai will most likely receive the majority of L.A. County's COVID-19 cases in terms of both numbers and case severity. Although Cedars' role as a trauma disaster relief center has allowed the hospital to tap into both emergency government supplies and private resources, Dr. Peter Chen, the hospital's head of pulmonary and critical care, said that the hospital is "barely scraping by." Such a dire shortage of supplies has even caused the hospital to look into alternative equipment in place of ventilators, such as a BiPap, which assists breathing.

Both hospitals face daunting and unique challenges in preventing and treating COVID-19. Your donation would allow healthcare workers to do their jobs safer and more effectively, so the rest of us can get back to our jobs sooner.
