Help Kumu Punahele Andrade Medical Fund

Donation protected
Aloha kakou,

I’m Kaneala Rodrigues, Punahele Andrade’s husband. Within the last 2 months, he has had 4 hip surgeries, 2 hip dislocations, 2 fractures, and a centralized life threatening infection in his left hip bone and joints.  This, of course, has placed a financial hardship on our family and has left Punahele emotionally distraught.

On July 15, 2019, Punahele had what was supposed to be a simple hip surgery.   His plans at the end of August was to take his soloist (pictured above) that won the overall 2019 Moku O Keawe Hula Competition in Hawaii to the Moku O Keawe Japan hula festival.  However, there were complications resulting in 2 failed surgeries.  After his second surgery in August he developed a very serious life-threatening infection and was immediately Medavac back to Oahu on August 29th.  His third surgery was handed over and performed by one of Hawaii’s top skilled orthopedic surgeons.  He is still at Straub on Oahu and will be here until his infection is under control.  Once discharged (date undetermined) from the hospital, he will be admitted to a skilled nursing facility (SNF) for the next 6 to 8 weeks on Oahu for continued healing, infection control, and rehabilitation.  After the 8 weeks, he may go back to Rehab of the Pacific for a 3rd time for more extensive physical and occupational rehabilitation.

I have been with him at his side taking care of him at the hospital, rehab, and at home for the past 8 weeks.  I have now exhausted all leave from work and am now on unpaid leave.  The bills and financial obligations continue to increase.

Friends and family have asked how they can help.  I’ve set up a GoFundMe account to assist with his hospital, rehab, skilled nursing facility, airline, and any other medical expenses that may arise.  Your donation, no matter the amount, is greatly appreciated.  It will help ensure Punahele receives the best care he needs to heal and progress so he can return to Hawaii island to be with his family, especially his 2 grandchildren.  His goal is to get his life back, walk without a walker, and return to his halau to teach and dance hula, which is his life, both here in Hawaii and Japan.

We want to thank everyone for your prayers, calls, texts, and visits.

To help get the word out, please feel free to share this on your Facebook timeline, any other social media source, email, or by word of mouth.  You can also contact me at [email redacted] for donations directly.

Mahalo again,

Kaneala & Punahele
