Help Kristi fight her burns battle

Over the years many of you who know Kristi Syme will know that she always puts other people before herself and she has organised fundraisers and extra help for others in whichever way she can. She is a caring, giving soul who always has time for anyone in need and would simply not ask for help herself. Now Kristi needs our help and here’s why:
Kristi, a single mother of three children; two beautiful girls and a 15-year-old son, who has an intellectual disability and for whom she is the sole carer. Kristi was recently put on an emergency Royal Flying Doctors flight to the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital, burns unit, for specialist treatment after a horrific accident left her badly burned and disfigured. Kristi was all ready to start her new job in aged care and home and community care to do what she loves when her life was turned upside down when a family get together turned tragically wrong.
Rather than sharing a relaxing night sitting around the backyard fire pit with family, she found herself instead, swiftly flown directly from Townsville to the burns unit in Brisbane, after a stray ember set alight a fuel container that Kristi now knows, was a little too close to the danger zone. In her efforts to quell the spreading flames, Kristi’s shoes and nightie caught on fire, and only her quick thinking by basically stripping herself naked of her burning clothes was she able to limit the spread of the flames to her now, badly burned legs. Despite her injuries, Kristi still managed to extinguish the remaining flames with what was now left of her flame ravaged nightie. Her son was mercifully uninjured in the emergency.
Kristi does not yet know when she will be able to return to Townsville and even when she does, she will be admitted straight into the Townsville University Hospital requiring further treatment and then she will require in-home care once discharged from hospital. Kristi was telling me that her bills are piling up with next to no income besides her family tax benefit and carer’s payments for her son. She is struggling to think about how she will pay rent, power, food and all the usual items not to mention the extra expenses demanded of her life with her son and his special needs.
She is currently going through a dramatic time with her severe burns to her legs and has had to have intensive surgeries with skin grafts and other treatments.
Now it’s time for us to give a little back to Kristi. She has many expenses right now that she is struggling with and we are reaching out to all her friends, family and warm-spirited souls to come together and help her in her desperate time of need while she recovers. Any small amount would make a difference and I know that if it was any of us in her position, she would be rallying the troops to help us out.
