My name is Kris, and I’m a single mother doing everything I can to support myself and my 19-year-old daughter, Zoe. Over the past few years, we’ve faced more challenges than I ever could have imagined. After our house burned down, I worked hard to rebuild our lives, but ongoing layoffs and company closures have made it nearly impossible to find stable work. Despite these setbacks, I’ve always prioritized Zoe’s well-being and our health, carrying insurance for both of us and making sure we had what we needed.

 Both Zoe and I have struggled with significant mental health challenges. Zoe’s journey included several crisis stays and a three-month residential program, and I’ve done my best to support her through every step. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and I’ve worked hard to improve my health, losing over 110 pounds. But in July, I was laid off again, and my severance has just run out. I’m driving for rideshare and delivering food to make ends meet, but it’s not enough to cover our most urgent needs. I’ve applied for SNAP and Medicaid, but while I wait for a decision, I’m at risk of losing our health insurance and struggling to pay for rent and car insurance.

 Right now, help with rent, car insurance, and medical insurance for the next two months would make the biggest difference for us. If I can get some relief in these areas, I can use my driving income to keep food on the table. I’m hopeful that the new year will bring job opportunities, and I’m determined to continue my health journey, which depends on access to my diabetic medication. Zoe is working hard, too—she’s aiming to get her driver’s license so she can find a better job and start saving for college.
