FAMILY OF GIRL WITH RARE TUMOR NEEDS ASSISTANCE DURING HER RECOVERY PERIOD.
A little about Madison…Madison or Maddie as she is known to family and friends is a fierce 8 year old girl who is smart, energetic and athletic who lives in Washington state. During her free time, Maddie loves cheerleading, gymnastics and playing soccer. She is the oldest of 3 children in her family.
Maddie had been a usually healthy child. The type of kid who does not get sick until 2019 Memorial Day weekend when she began looking pale and started complaining of pain and fever. On May 28, she was still experiencing pain and fever and began to complain of breathing difficulties. She was taken a local hospital ER. While at the ER, X-rays of Maddie’s chest were taken. The X-rays showed a large tumor present in Maddie’s chest. Doctors referred Maddie to Children’s Hospital in Seattle where pediatrics specialists who could identify and treat the tumor. Maddie had a CT and blood tests performed when she arrived at Children’s Hospital. After reviewing the CT images and blood test results, the doctor’s at Children’s Hospital concluded that the tumor in Maddie’s chest was a Mediastinal Teratoma. Mediastinal teratomas are rare, especially rare in girls. Maddie has one a little larger than a tennis ball sitting on top of her heart. The tumor is also pushing on her lungs and is rubbing against a major nerve which runs through the chest. Teratoma’s can be benign or malignant but either way the must be surgically removed. If not removed teratomas continue to grow. If Maddie’s teratoma continues to grow larger it will collapse her lung. Due to the location of Maddie’s teratoma, she will need major chest surgery for removal. Maddie is expected to remain in the hospital for a week after surgery and her total recovery time is expected to be 8 weeks. Maddie’s surgery will be in late June 2019.
Maddie’s mom is a single mother of 3 children who works as a hairstylist. She will need to take time off of work to for Maddie’s surgery and recovery. Maddie’s mom will be unable to work and the family has does not have another source of income, she will have trouble paying rent, utilities, and buying food. Any donations in any amount would be greatly appreciated.
