Help Khalil get to St. Frances!

Donation protected
Khalil has been my little brother since October 2012. We've hung out almost every Sunday over the past six years (including via Skype during my year in Guatemala). We've played about a thousand games of Uno, cooked hundreds of meals, read books ranging from Harry Potter to Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father, and watched every Pixar movie ever made. He's grown up from a kind and cheerful eight-year-old (look at the photo above!) living in East Baltimore to a kind and cheerful teenager in North Baltimore -- and now to a high school student.

Khalil has had some challenges in school, largely due to ADHD, but he focused himself during his eighth grade year. His hard work paid off, and he wound up with As and Bs. That hard work got him into St. Frances Academy , an outstanding Catholic school with the low student-to-teacher ratio that Khalil needs to succeed. He, his mother, and I were all thrilled when he was accepted, because we knew that he'd do better there than at a public school with much larger class sizes. Khalil was especially excited about St. Frances's brand new wrestling program, because that's Khalil's sport.

Khalil's mom, Brittany, was concerned about financial aid but allowed Khalil to go to orientation even though she hadn't yet heard from the school about how much they could reduce their ~$10,000 tuition for him. Brittany is a nurse's aide at a local hospital who also drives for Uber and Lyft. She makes enough to support Khalil, but not enough to afford private school. Halfway through orientation (the photo above is from his first day -- you can see his excitement), the school told Brittany that they could only give $3,100 in financial aid. That leaves Brittany and her mother (who also said she'd help) responsible for $7,100 in annual tuition plus $850 in dues/fees, so about $8,000 in total annual costs. Brittany and her mother can come up with part of this, but they can't afford the full $8,000.

My parents and I are helping, and Khalil contributed several hundred dollars from his summer job, but we're not yet where we need to be for his family to afford it. We're trying to raise money to help Khalil study at St. Frances for at least his freshman and sophomore years of high school. From the funds we raise on here, I'll coordinate with Brittany and send regular checks to the school to make up the shortfall.

Khalil already completed orientation (even receiving the "student of the week" award!) and his first day of school is September 4th. Anything you can contribute helps us keep Khalil in a school where he has a better chance of success, and we would all appreciate it tremendously! Thank you  : )
