Help Keep the Steiner Family in Our Home

Friends, Family, and Kind Strangers,

Asking for help is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, especially knowing so many are struggling right now. But I’m writing this on behalf of my wife, Britt, our daughter, Alice (12), and myself because we are at our wits' end and on the verge of losing the only home our children have ever known.

Our Journey to This Point

For the past two years, our family has been weathering a perfect storm. My wife, Britt, has been courageously battling the debilitating symptoms of her chronic rheumatoid arthritis. The condition has worsened to the point where she has been completely unable to work since November 2023. Despite her constant pain, permanently dislocated thumbs, and the unanimous agreement from her doctors that she is disabled, her application for disability benefits has been repeatedly denied.

We’ve been surviving on my part-time faculty salary, and by the grace of God and the incredible generosity of friends and family, we have scraped by month after month. Earlier this month, we finally made it to Britt's final disability hearing with a judge. We are holding onto hope, but over two weeks have passed with no decision, leaving us to face at least one more month of impossible bills alone.

The Tipping Point We're Facing Now

This month, the situation has become a crisis:
Our monthly mortgage payment has unexpectedly jumped by $500 to $2,000 due to an escrow shortfall.

We have exhausted all mortgage assistance and forbearance options available to us.
If we cannot make this payment by October 15th, we will lose our home.

To make matters worse, our car registration has lapsed. While the car is insured, I can't legally drive it for any gig work like I've done in the past to close the gap before my monthly paycheck arrives. We are truly out of options; otherwise, we would not be here, begging for your kindness and generosity.

There is Hope on the Horizon

This is not a story without hope. There are two potential lifelines that could change everything for us, both expected around the end of this month:

  • A final decision on Britt's disability claim. An approval would provide us with the stability we’ve been fighting for.
  • I have interviewed for a full-time position at Wake Tech, which would be a life-changing promotion.

If either of these comes through, we will finally be able to breathe again. The problem is, even with good news, the funds from back-pay or a new salary won't arrive in time to save our home.

How You Can Help

We are turning to our community to ask for help to bridge this critical, final gap. We need to raise funds to cover our October mortgage and essential expenses to ensure we still have a home when our good news (hopefully) arrives.

  • Mortgage Payment: $2,000
  • Car Registration/Fines to make car legal: $550
  • Groceries & Utilities: $650
  • Incidentals: $1,000
  • Total: $4,200+

Any amount you can contribute will go directly to keeping our family housed and safe.

It will give our children the stability of staying in their home, in their school, and in their community. It will give us the breathing room we need to get back on our feet for good (or at worst the time to sell our house so that we can move somewhere more affordable)

If you are unable to donate, sharing this campaign with your network would be an immense help. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for reading our story and for any support you can offer.

With immense gratitude,

Tank, Britt, and Alice
