Hey there, this is Travis Russell (KN4WJL). Every year, I run the NC Ham Radio Exhibit at the North Carolina State Fair. The purpose of this exhibit is to promote Amateur Radio in our communities, and share the importance of Amateur Radio to our individual neighborhoods when there is a disaster of any kind.
The exhibit consists of an Amateur Radio Command Center provided graciously by the Johnston Amateur Radio Society (JARS). In addition, there is a 12x10 tent where we share information about Amateur Radio, show kids how to send their names in Morse Code, and demonstrate Amateur Radio through our "Go Kit" in the tent. We also give "tours" of JARSCom where there are many radios and antennas, and when possible we call nets from the truck.
The exhibit is manned by volunteers from all over the State. In 2025, we had over 30 volunteers from 20+ Amateur Radio Clubs. We ran two shifts per day, with three volunteers per shift. We shared Amateur Radio with more than 2000 visitors in 2025!
To manage this exhibit requires my presence every day of the fair, around the clock. We start at 0800 setting up the exhibit for the day. I meet volunteers at the gate at the beginning of each shift and transport them to the exhibit. At the end of the night (2100) I close the exhibit and lock it up.
I am only asking for help for three things:
Boarding of my dogs: $2904
Ice for the exhibit cooler used by volunteers: $48
Printing of the brochures used in the exhibit: $314
I am asking all ARCs and individuals to contribute whatever they can - as little or as much - to help offset these costs. Any amount helps ensure I can continue supporting the exhibit in this fashion. Thank you for all your support!
