Hi, my name is Ciara, and I’m fundraising for something deeply personal—something that affects my family every single day.

When I was a child, my mom went into septic shock. She survived, but it left her permanently disabled—physically and mentally. She cannot walk. She cannot use the bathroom on her own, eat or drink without help, or even remember something five minutes after you’ve told her. It’s like she’s living with severe dementia and autism at the same time. She needs full-time care, every single day.

For years, her mother—my grandma—has been her caregiver through a state care program here in Kansas. They live together because that’s the only safe and practical option. But now, the care company is trying to fire my grandma because they live together. They want to leave my mom completely alone from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day. That’s seven hours where no one would be there to help her eat, drink, go to the bathroom, or stay safe.

Let me be clear: My mom cannot be left alone. This is dangerous. It’s heartbreaking. And it’s completely avoidable if they would just let my grandma keep doing what she’s been doing—loving and caring for her daughter.

• Keep my mom safe while we look for long-term solutions
