My Uncle Donny is the most amazing person!!! He is caring & gentle and loves to socialize and entertain everyone he meets. We jokingly call him the 'Mayor of North Bay' as he is well know in our city as the friendly man in the wheelchair that everyone sees out & about waving to everyone he passes. He is determined to make his daily trips to the local Shopping Mall and Tim Hortons come Rain, Shine or Snow.... the weather Hot or Cold is never enough to deter him from getting out. I truly believe that his daily outings are the reason we are so blessed to still have his presence in our lives.
Donny has been a fighter his entire life, he was born with spina bifida and my Grandmother was advised that in all likelihood he would not have a long life span. Later in his childhood he suffered an injury and was diagnosed with Gangrene and as a young teenager his right leg was amputated. He also now suffers from Type 1 diabetes and is required to administer daily Insulin injections.
Uncle Donny has never allowed his disabilities to slow him down or interfere with his love of gardening, hockey and of course Elvis & Music !!!!! His beautiful gardens when we were growing up inspired my brother Luke & I over the years and now we also share that same love of gardening. Anyone who had the pleasure of playing road hockey with Uncle Donny and my brothers when we were children would never forget the joy that playing goalie brought to him.
I truly believe that his daily outings give him a reason to keep moving forward and I fear that if he were to be in a position where he could not leave the house his overall well being and quality of life would be drastically impacted.
I am hoping to raise some money to help us purchase a new or gently used all terrain motorized wheelchair (as a surprise) for him. In the past the chairs he has owned have not been equipped for the weather we have here in North Bay and as the cold weather returns again I am concerned that his ability to get out & about will begin to decrease.
If you can find it in your heart to help us and can spare anything at all we would greatly appreciate any donations to help us meet this goal.
