Help Katrina Pay For Her Tumor Surgery

I am writing this today to ask that you support one of my dearest friends, Katrina Martinez.

She is currently a graduate student and teaching assistant at New York University in their American Studies program and works part-time at Starbucks; but you may know Katrina from the Williams College Class of 2018, Pine View High School Class of 2014, her post-bacc at Yale University, or her various past jobs.

 

For the last few months, Katrina has been experiencing pelvic pain and a whole range of other symptoms that persuaded her to go to the doctor and seek treatment. It turns out that Katrina has a tumor and PCOS, and since finding out has been navigating scheduling, insurance, and billing issues. After she was finally able to get an MRI, she found out that her tumor was non-cancerous (!!), but it's been growing since birth and desperately needs to be taken out before anything bad happens–as she has an aunt who has ovarian cancer.

 

The doctor’s office that will be performing the surgery provided Katrina with an estimate, and it is a whopping approximation of $5000, due to the insurance not covering the full cost and there being a 20% coinsurance and high deductible (yeah, insurance talk is confusing). Like most people in this country who face or are in medical debt, she is considering not getting the surgery at all because she cannot afford to pay this amount as a graduate student. But she has been in pain for so long and this tumor has been wreaking havoc on her body.
