<div>UPDATE:  Katherine has extensive, high grade breast cancer. She first discovered the lump in the end of May, with the lumpectomy being 8/9/24. Although imaging suggested the tumor was only 1.2cm, the surgeon removed 4cm, but was unable to get clear margins. With this particular aggressive cancer, growing so quickly, the only treatment option left was a double mastectomy. Katherine was in pain and continued to feel the lump grow every day (despite the surgeons saying it wasn't growing), and by 9/12/24 (the date of the double mastectomy), it had grown another 6cm (for a total of 10cm!), leaving only 1 millimeter of clear margin up against her pectoral muscles!  Given how extensive the tumor was, the skin left behind is very thin (and will not thicken over time). If Katherine's skin does not start circulating blood by Wednesday 9/25 (her next surgical follow up), she will have to have another surgery next week - to remove the reconstruction AND the dying skin tissue. Due to the size of this area of skin, and other health factors, if this third surgery has to be performed, it will effectively foreclose Katherine's chance of having reconstruction in the future, as well. Hyperbaric treatments are Katherine's last hope for avoiding a third surgery - but her insurance won't approve it.

<div>A message from Katherine: We've lost several family members to cancer, with several more recent cancer diagnoses (2 of which being breast cancer). These last 2 and 1/2 months have been filled with lots of questions and not too many straightforward answers. Just today (8/7/24), we were informed we had to bring thousands of dollars to the surgery on Friday (REQUIRED at the time of service), with the remainder being billed to us next week. So, with the surgical consult, today's pre-op procedure, and Friday's surgery, we have to come up with at least $6,900 (that's with insurance!). With all the pro bono legal work I've done since 2020, we simply can't afford these costs for this care."
